Carver, It Is IhoiiKht, expected that a line to the timber would add a steady source of Income when he first began Its con struction, and felt as soon as he reached the green timber belt that extension and operation would be easy. Now, however, that the lum ber Industry is at a practical stand still, nobody knows for how lonn. the hope of Immediate freight traf fic has fallen through and he is look ing for another field. This field lieB in Kugene, which Is the centre of the upper Willamette valley, fly connecting with this city the promoter not only stands a show of getting a share of considerable car rying trade through an untouched section of the Willamette valley, but of making connections with local freight traffic which will originate with the building of an electric line up the McKenzie. Not only does It seem the Intention of the CV.rvallls & Alsea I.) come to Kugene, but also later, when means are uvailuble, to go to the Siuslaw and connect this portion of the inte rior with the coast and therefore cheaper rate. Cur vail In is not a good terminus for such a route, for tne Yaciulna road runs from there to Yaqutna bay. causing too much competition for the now line. Eugene, therefore, seems a much mora favorable point to out side observors, who have recently studied the sitpation. (iixxl Development Even If the road were owned by the Southern Pacific, and there Is nothing to Indicate that it is, the construction of such a line would be of Immense value to the county, for in Western l.ane there are large re sources which can be made to contri bute to the upbuilding of Eugene. As the route for the Carver line has been mapped out, Eugene has been threat ened with a loss of trade, not only In the foothills of the Coast range, but in the SIubIuw valley Itself. With the building of any kind of a road to the timber belt mills would spring up, as they have in other pnrts of Lime county, when transportation facilities have been nfforded, add ing thousands of men to the wealth producing population. This develop ment is bound to come, the only re maining question being which town will get the benefit, Corvullis or Eugene? MAHKIKI) On Wednesday.
