Now that the Western teams of the American League are playing at home they doubtless will cinch the first four positions In the league standing. ! There is not an infield in the coun-l try playing better ball at present than Jones, Williams, Wallace and Ferris, j of the St. Louis Browns. i The Eastern league has two new I managers, Schafley, who succeeded Kelly at Toronto, and Holly at Roch-i ester, where Al Buckenberger was ; pilot for several years. i Manager Mullaney, whose Jackson-; ville tea mis making a runaway race in the South Atlantic League, was, given a benefit recently which net ted the "Old Scout," a tub full of money. j Word from New York has it that Owner Farrell of the Highlanders is out for a new manager and la willing to pay any amount of money to se cure the right man. The New York Nationals have won four double-headers this season and lost one, while the New York Ameri cans have won one and lost four. The great work of the Detroit team has been a surprise, as few predicted the Tigers making such a fight for the pennant after falling before the Cubs last fall. Booze and an Indian are bad things to mix. The Indian player Bender who stabbed his manager Wm. Clark, of the Columbia, S. C. team, was crazy drunk at the time. Bender now stands a good chance of being black-listed by the National Commis sion. The St. Louis Nationals don't lok to be of championship timber. Never theless Owner Murphy of the Chicago champions does not hesitate to go ti the Cardinals for star pitchers. Manager Bobby Lowe of the Grand Rapids team had to forfeit a game to Dayton recently on account of six of his' star players going on a strike. The players claimed their salary was overdue and they must have some money before they would go on the diamond. Kr'c!'!n; i)f Nations. In ?!! COTTAGE GROVE NEWS OF LOCAL IMPORTANCE In the absence of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Manning last week to Oak land some scoundrel of scoundrels entered and ransacked their home the Stouffer cottage at the lower end of Railroad street. Among the arti cles stolen was an almost new .32 cal ibre Winchester, three pillows, quilts, an overcoat, pair of new pants and suspenders, a pair of heavy shoes, a lantern and other things. Mr. Man ning believes the Job to have been executed by local talent, and thinks he has a pretty good clue, which we hope he has. If the guilty parties are apprehended they should be given the limii. There Is an activity about the nr mory, preparatory to packing up for the ten or twelve days' annual en campment at American Lake, near Tacoma. Company E will be well represented In the big encampment, as many of the boys have been plan ning to combine their summer out ing with this occasion, and a large percentage of the company will there fore go into camp. The members of Company E will leave Cottage Grove on the early Monday morning over land, and therefore few of them will retire Sunay night. It has been suggested that the city ma terlally Increase Its police force on this occasion, or temporarily relieve It from duty.
