HANSON rooms the clerks and attendants were suavely granting or denying admis sion to visitors, and everywhere there were messeugera scurrying hither and thither. The scene was the headquarters of the Kepuhllran national committee and the occasion was the first day of business In connection with the Presi dential campaign. Many visitors called today but comparatively few were given an audience. The head quartera will not be In shape for real business until next week, when Mr. Hitchcock and his assistants will take off their coats and begin work In earnest. Kroin the headquarters In the Met ropolitan building the Taft campaign will be directed In every detail. Chi cago and Cincinnati will be scenes of activity 111 connection with the Re publican campaign, but the New York headquarters will be the fountain head from which all Important orders will be Issued and through which all campaign contributions will flow. The national committee will work In close harmony with the Congres sional committee, which Is to have Its headquarters In the St. James htilMlng. The two headquarters have been connected by private wire and It Is expected there will be frequent conferences between the members of the two committees. The relations between the two In fact will be far morn Intimate than was ever the case In any previous campaign. . The headquarters of the national committee nro the same as those oc cupied as local headqunrters In the liiHt two national campaigns. But the visitors today found few of the old familiar faces. Chairman Hitchcock has surrounded himself with a cleric al force that Is almost entirely new to the work. For the most part the clerks and attendants are young men whom.. Mr. Hitchcock terms "hust lers." The sons and nephews of com mitteemen and others with a pull are consplcloiis by their absence. The committee expects that It will have to get along with a leaner porketbook than In previous years and as a con sequence none but workers will be kept on the payroll at headquarters SPRINGFIELD NEWS ITEMS OF INTEREST II. Mrs. Mnrv Farmer, the condemned mur deress of Mrs. Sarah Brennan of Brownsville. Is under sentence to die In the electric chair at the state pris on here next week, but steps taken by her counsel looking to another trial will serve to prevent the sen fence being carried out at the pres cut time. Tho prevailing Impression Is that the sentence ultimately will be commuted to one of life imprison merit. The woman herself, has dis played little emotion since her con viction and appears to be indifferent to her fate. Mrs. Farmer's crime was one of the most fiendish in the criminal an nals of Northern New York. Her vie tim, who was 55 years old, was her neighbor and Intimate friend and the motive was to gain possession of the Brennan home, deeds of which Mrs. Farmer had forged. Mrs. Brennan was hacked to pieces and her body stuffed in a trunk. Mrs. r;irm?rs husband is also under Indictment cn a charge of murder In the first d-'gree us accessory to the crime. IK. J. W.
