"He Is here so much and I grow so tired of him." Paul stroked the little band thnt rested on the table. "It's a shame," be declared. "One must obey one's fattier." "Not In any such arrangement as that," cried Paul fiercely. "Let blra leave' his collection to the mUBeum. At lust with reluctant fingers he re turned the scarab to Paul and went to his study, while Paul aud Lena slipped out for a walk. Ever since Paul had been an undergraduate at tho college be had loved Lena, and now that be hntl come back to demand her hand hi marriage it was a shock to find that the scientist had determined to sacri fice his daughter, as he bad everything else, to his beloved collection. It was the finest private collection of scarabs extant, autl It was rbe pro fessor's wish that the work might be can-id on by bis son-in-law. To this end he had looked , with favor upon Professor Katzluger, who shared bis enthusiasm for the collection. Lena did not share her father's lik ing for the German professor, and sbo was very much In love with Taul, but the habit of olietllence was strong within ber, and even with Paul plead lug his case In person he could not In duce her to agree to a runaway match, though she did promise to make every effort to evade a marriage with Kat slnger. With this promise Paul had to rest content, but It was with little of the elation which had marked his coming that he took tils departure. It was plain to be seen that the professor card more for tho advancement of bis collection than ho tlltl for his tliiught tor's happiness, or, more correctly, he convinced himself that the two inter ests were Identical. In the eyes of Professor Gatton, a man who did not cure for scarabs was no man at all and not tit to marry bis daughter. Ilia only Interest In Paul lay lu the hitter's possession of the odd scnrtib, the like of w hich 'be had not seen tie fore in his vast cxH?rience. He was slnvked st t'uo careless fashion lu which Paul carrltsl It alsut In his waistcoat pocket, and when. Just tie fore the younger man's departure, be found the precious scarab on the stalrs he told himself that It served Paul right If he lost the treasure. At the moment he had no thought of retaining It, but wheu Paul, missing, Hie scarab, made hupllry the profess or, jttiy tie would not say. tlenld hav ing seen It. nu.1 the mischief w as done. We toM himself that he would pretend ! yiu. to nnu it tn-rore ram tert, m,..a the theft possible. At first S hail argued that It servd 1'aul right, but now the tluy scarab had grown to the weight of a millstone about bis neck. He did not d::re take it out and place if in his collection. He did not even dare to look at it biuise.f lest Lena, coming in suddenly, as was ber wont, should discover blui with the . evidence of guilt in bis hand. The evil be bad done proved upon bis health. He suddenly grew very old and feeble, and bis enthusiasm for his collection waned. The thought tbat his bobby had made of him a thief was bitter Indeed, and In the long silence of the nlgbt be tossed sleepless on bis bed sad cursed the day be had seen the scarab on the stairs. Paul bad taken bis loss as a slight thing snd after a casual inquiry had let tbe matter drop, but the professor knew bow priceless was tte flndL and the thought that be bad betrayed the confidence of a guest was an additional source of pain to the sensitive old man. At last bis condition became so grave that Lena was alarmed. The professor would not consent to see a physician. He knew well enough thnt no medical man could bring him relief, and as a last resource Lena wrote Paul asking him to come aud see them. Already Paul had gained a reputaiion as a spe cialist, and since ber father would not go to see a physician the only thing to be done was to bring the specialist to him. ' ' ' She said nothing of Tsui's visit to her father, and she arranged wltb Paul to pretend that he bad 'dropped off over one train to pay a short visit. Tbey metonly at the tuble, and Paul's first glance told bim that bis host was laboring under some great mental strain and that nothing could be done until that Btrain was relieved. Wltb tbe Idea of diverting the professor's attention from bis cares be brought out a scarab. At tbe sight of it the professor half rose from tbe table and uttered a hoarse cry of surprise. The scarab was tbe exact duplicate of the one in tbe secret compartment of the safe, and, not profiting by experience, Paul was carrying this in bis waistcoat pocket, as be bad tbe other. There were two?" asked the pro fessor. "Dosens," declared Paul. "I owe you an apology, professor. 1 bad Intended to explain It before, but tbe loss of, the other put It out of my mind. This is not a real scarab." "It is a copy of the other?" "No. None of them are - genuine. They are luck charms. You remem ber Dud Glllis of '02? Well, he is selling these as mascots. You must re member the oulja fad. This is a copy of that You may have this one. It never brought me any luck." He tossed the stone across the table, and wltb trembling hands tbe pro fessor examined the gift He would have sworn to its genuineness, but iu the fact of Paul's statement this could not be so. He experienced an odd sense of relief. He was no less a thief tnough there was not banging over him the dread fear that he would not be able to make restitution. He passed tho stone back to Paul. . "I meant to tell you that I found the other," he said slowly. "'I waB wondering how to get it to you." "Keep them both, then," cried Paul. "They brlug me no luck." "Hut it does," said the professor earnestly. "It brings you tbe woman you wish to marry. It is better that my collection should pass to the mu seum. I would not have my daugh ter's husband share my craze. Not uutil lately have I come to that con clusion, and It -was this scarab that brought the belief about. After that can you say that it brings no luck?" "Luck!" cried Paul. "I'm going to write Dud to put the price up to a mil lion dollars If he can guarantee like results lu every case." lie leand over to kiss Lena, and the professor stole away from, the table, free from care at last. Paul's scarab had worked a double cure. His Turn to Criticise. Lltt'.e John. who. at the mature age of four, has leurnd the Lord's Prayer Is often criticised by his sister, two years older, for slight mistakes which he cannot always avoid In offering the petition. A few Sundays ago he was taken-, to church for the first time. When the moment for the prayer ar rived and the congregation bowed their beads John's mother took the precaution to whisper in blm that he must be very quiet.
