Too of ten He persons who most louuiy pru rtilm iha existence of a silver lln US m business clouds are afterward found to be individuals wno auer nrd desire to borrow money. Speaking of this St. Louis move ment, the Los Angeles Express re cently observed that the organization lad made good. There have un doubtedly been pilgrimages to the Mhsourl metropolis by the curious, wlib cash In pocket, to view the new ly born prosperity, and there have been reports of resumption of indus trial plant! in that vicinity, . But St Louis has, not been selfish in orig inating the prosperity revival ' and then gathering all the benefits for herself. Evidence of her altruistic spirit Is confirmed by that confirmed pessimist in finance New York city. A press dispatch from the Eastern metropolis soon after the association m formed chronicled the pleasing fact that twenty buyers from one St. Louis house were recently found at ne hotel In Gotham, whereas in for mer days and happier times fifteen were considered the limit.' This surely Indicates that St. Louis li tilling to spend money, although tie deeper significance of the incl- tat may be that, having started the wti, the Missouri city is the first to have money to spend. If the lat- ter assumption Is correct there should "rush for the band waeon hv nth. "Woman baa fallJ to 'make good' her pretensions to consideration as an Independent leader and thinker In the professions and In business. Al most nowhere in the high places do we find women. Very few are they among the 'physicians of note, few among lawyers and few as executive heads of colleges or holders of profes sional chairs, few among the ranks of editors. And In the teaching and newspaper fields they have had great opportunities, whatever may be the case today." "Little Joe" Brown, of Georgia, be lieves the newspaper is mightier than the megaphone; also that spellbind ers sometimes bind, themselves. He couldn't make a speech to save him self, but he'll be governor all the same, having defeated the redoubt able Hoke Smith in the Democratic primaries. Eugene Is building faster this year than ever before in Us history. Next year wjll surpass the present, how ever, or The Guard will miss its guess a mile wide. You might paste this 'prediction in your hat for future ref erence.' With a great cereal crop through out the country, plenty of money in the banks to move it with, and a steadily, rising market, even a pres idential, campaign should create little disturbance in business conditions. How's this for treason? A Geor gian writes for publication: ''Re form has had its false whiskers torn oft. It stands revealed for the worth less scarecrow it is." Bet that fellow is in cahoots with a moonshiner. In announcing his retirement from politics, which he was really never in, perhaps John Hays Hammond was only trying to head off a call from the campaign collector. Oh, fie, lohn; you ought to chip in. The late Grover Cleveland was once asked what was the hardest thing he had to do as president. "To retain my self-respect and keep on speaklitg terms wl(h the political bosses," he replied. There are" charity "workers" In England, as well as on this side. One London Institution, recently Invest! gated, was found to have a force of paid officials numbering forty more than its Inmates. -. When freely expressed, without manipulation, the voice of the people is seldom wrong. ' It 1b the faked voice that sometimes bamboozles the careless observer. A salon of poetry Is -to" be estab lished by the - French government. Most editors in this country have one which they would gladly dispose of. More wheat will be harvested in Lane county this year than for many seasons past. ' And best of all, the market is steadily moving upward. New York City and Albany, Ore gon, still have street cars propelled by horse-power. ' , MARION AND POLK COUNTY. GROWERS TO DRY CHKRRIKS Salem, Or.i July 22. The anxiety of growers regarding the future of the cherry and loganberry Industry in this valley, caused by the dull mar ket for these products this year, has been allayed to some extent by the fa vor with which the drying process is being received and the extent to which it is being practiced. Several large growers in Marlon and Polk counties are drying large quantities of loganberries and experi ments are being made in several places In drying cherries. A repre sentative of McClure, Kllton & Com pany was up from Portland today for a conference with local fruit men. He states that there Is a, geod market ror dried cherries, and there is a be lief here that the drying plan ma; solve the market problem. THEEVGE.sk DAILY GUARD. Don't get out of your bed in the pjornjug and go Immediately to the window and "breathe deeply twenty times" or ten times. Don't stand at al In front pf the window just then. Why! Because while you have been sleeping yqur blood has withdrawn Itself from the skip surfaces and your nerve forces have concentrated theinsplves at inside centers. It you expose yourself indep these conditions,, unless you nre. very Btropg and robust, you are nkely to catch your "death Pf poid." ' ' Don't take a cold Data tne nrst fnmg In the morning after you arise; Why? For like reasons your blood is not In the surface. It has not been needed there. The bedclothes have kept the kin warm. And a cold plunge at this time, unless you are quite strong, will do you more harm than good. If you take a cold bath Immediately alter brisk physical eiorclse, which brings the blood to the outside, or if you take a cold bath following a hot bath, which produces the same effect, you may get some benefit. - I Don't "drink a glaBS of cold water as Boon as you get out of bed." If you drink anything before breakfast, take a little sip or two of hot water. Why? Because the stomach Is not ready to do business before breakfast. The blood is withdrawn. If you douche It with cold water at such a time, you chill that organ and derange its func tions; also, If you pour a lot or not water Into it, you wash out the gastric Juices and Impede digestion. a Don't take violent exercise before breakfast nor Immediately following. Why Because your vital forces before breakfast are low and need recuperat ing from within. After breakfast the processes of digestion Bhould not be , Interfered with until the stomach gets . a chanco to begin operations. But you say i These don't contravene popular be- j llefs In some respects and the advice of "health magazines" In others. That may be true, but popular opinions may be wrong, ajd health mngnslncs nre not Infallible. We have gathered these truths from a hyglenlst who has given ttiee mat ters a lifetime study.
