His practical conclti- suggestion to the club was a determined effort be made to re the establishment of a hatch- at Gate Creek from which the might ship the young trout to various fishing streams of Ore . or perhaps arrange tor hatching fit at the salmon hatchery on the er. Hr. Cox's suggestion met with the 'rty approval of the club and e nding committee will be appointed 'ake up this matter, not as affect Lane county alone, but the entire le, which has many rivers that In wure rival the McKenzie as a we fishing stream and deserve to ooked after before they are en If fished out. The explanation Is quite comfort ing, even if nobody Beemed to care particularly, it may calm the minds of esthetic persons who Imagine a de ficit looks bad and forget that a Bur plus Is a temptation. It seems to be the opinion among the promoters of the Lane County Fair Association that It Is too late this season to arrange for holding a regular fair next fall. There Is, how ever, a plan on foot to have a day's racing for local horses after the track Is completed and the new grounds put In good shape. Mr. Yo ran, at last nlghf's meeting of the Commercial Club, suggested that some kind of an exhibition be held In town in connection with the races, and the Idea may take practical shape. Other Oregon towns hold "rose fairs," "cherry fairs," etc., and there Is no reason why Eugene could not make a success of some kind of an exhibition Immediately after bar vest." The suggestion la worth seri ous consideration. ' ' ' The railroad yards In this city will, before the end ot the year, be the finest In the state ot Oregon In arrangement and park features. The oompany has evidently decided to do Its work of rebuilding and re-arrangement thoroughly, without re gard to expense, and asks -the co-operation of the city and citizens in the matter of opening streets and drive ways that will make tor accessabillty and convenience. The opening up of Olive and Fourth from Pearl at oppo site ends of the yards, Is deplred by the company officials, and the council should co-operate with them without any unnecessary delay, thus exhibiting a spirit of appreciation on the part of the city that Is certainly due the company for their splendid Improve ments. However, not being a widow, we are not sure, but guess when the selection for number two begins to nibble is about right. U. S. Marshal John Abernathy, "Teddy's" friend, who kills wolves with his hands, is now up against an other sort of problem. He eloped with and married an Oklahoma far mer's daughter the other day. .. In Portland they are arresting and fining those property owners who re fuse to cut the grass and weeds along the streets adjacent to their premis es. That is the proper thing to do In any city. Another campaign iio is hereby nailed. ' Mr. Taft has not challenged the fastest runner ln baseball for a go around the bases. He's relying on bis heavy batting, not hlB sprint-ing. As the big politicians and big news papers are agreed In disliking the tickets, it seems to be up to the peo ple to make their own enthusiasm. This new song, "It Always Comes With Summer," refers, of course, to the silly season, which is now upon the country. The delegates at the Democratic Denver convention were too busy making a noise like enthusiasm to get frightened at Richmond Pearson Hobson's personally conducted Inva iion of the Pacific coast by an army of 1,000,000 armed Japanese. Mr. Hobson has gone about the. country o long sounding his trumpet of varning that he has really come to believe that there Is some likelihood of his prophecies coming true, so he can't for the life of him understand why the other fellow doesn't get frightened, too, ; Though willing to join in the gen eral hope that Peary will rope the ole this trip, we don't mind ac fnowledging that we don't know vhat he will do with It, If he does, lowevef, there are , several other .hi'igs we don't know. St. Louis doctors are "P against t good and hard, and have to live up to the Missouri motto, the board of health having decided that "heart "allure" death certificates don't gD any more. Some people have uo reveronpe for style or anything else. One of them speaks of the much glorified "sheath" skirts as "just a dress with a placket hole open all the way . to the bottom." ' That $29,000,000 fine was prob lbly tabooed as a conversational sub ject during John D. Archbold's recent visit to Sagamore Hill; also campaign contributions. The police of Pittsburg have re voked the permit of the Salvation Ar my In that town, and hereafter it can no-longer appear on the streets to preach, pray and sing to the sinning llHIIOK N'OTKS OF MASK HALL DIAMOND. The Pittsburg climate must agree with Roy Thomas. Since leaving Philadelphia Roy has shown most beautiful baseball. And while figuring up the Nation al League race don't overlook the New York Giants. The Yorkers have been going great the past month. Manager Murray of the Philadel phia Nationals is having more trouble than a judge at a baby show In try ing to keep his "Quakers" awake. Word from St. Louis has It that "Iron Man" Joe McGlnnlty hopes Manager McGraw will trade him to the St. Louis Nationals. That's an awful hope. "Slugger" Johnson of the Portland Ore., team, Is a real hitter. A home run, a three base hit and two two base hits In a recent game shows that Johnson knows how to pick out a good bat. Major league scouts are getting fussy. A majority of the scouters sa they haven't, seen a minor leaguer this season worth a try-out with the big fellows. Just when Manager Chance had ev erything nicely arranged for his Chi cago Cubs to lead the procession those horrid Pittsburg Pirates step ped In and spoiled it all . The New York Highlanders have not improved undervthe management of "Kid" Elberfleld. It Is hard to be lieve. that a team,, made up ot so many . star players -eouldv play such poor ball. : i Several youngBters have been do Ing' iiice work on .theidlantond this season', buij when It comes. to the gen uineistar performerB on the slab be sure to place an X .opposite the names of William Donovan of De troit,., and 'William Dlneen, of St. Louis. The committee of the Sluslaw Riv er Improvement Club are busy at work securing information and striv ing to get things in shape as fust as possible to submit the question of Is suing bonds for the harbor improve THE BLACK CAT BROUGHT LUCK. cASYStiAvg-5 JM f ; ' : ' iroaucta of actual excellence and reasonable claims truthfully presented and which have attained to world-wide acceptance through the approval of the Wcll-Inlormed of the World; not of indi viduals only, but of the many who have the happy faculty of selecting and obtain ing the best the world affords. One of tho products of that class, of known component parts, an Ethical remedy, approved by physicians and com mended by tho Well-Informed of the World as a valuable and wholesome family laxative is the well-known Syrup of Tigs and Elixir of Senna. To get its beneficial effects always buy the genuine, manu factured by the California Fig Syrup Co., only, and for sale by all leudiug druggist. ment to the) people for their approval. The adoption of the' Initiative meth od of enacting laws has complicated atrairs so tliat there Is a difference ol opinion among attorneys about the proper course to pursue in voting the bonds. When asked about the mutter Attorney General Crawford stated that without investigating it was hie opinion that when the Initiative was adopted it took control of this ques tion out of the hands of the legisla ture and that the law to permit the issue of the bonds could be passed only by a vote of tho people. One at torney who is also a member of tin legislature, doubts whether such a law passed in this way would be con stitutional and be sustained by the courts. The committee will consult some of the ablest attorneys of the state and get their opinions as to the best course to pursue. It is .Im portant that every step be taken in the right way that there be no daub; as to the legality of the bonds.
