ENVERIsnmile fi'A.- U hSh. This may Sf!v-'.l be one reason era attending the beraocratlc national convention which meets there July 7 may expect a high time. A tablet on the side of a build ing In the Colorado metropolis sets forth the .Interesting fact that the altitude at that point Is exact ly one mile above sea. level. .Never be fore has a national political convention sleeted to bold Itself so high up In the world,. and never before has such, t convention been held so far. to (be westward In the Democratic na tional eooiiBntton met n Kansas CUy. -that being until th;,present. year ."far thest west" for all national nominating conventions. .. . . . Denver Is pardonably proud of Its distinction In securing .this great con vention,, where will assemble 1,008 del egates from all the states and territo ries to nominate candidates for the ed tba construction of a convention hall, to be called the Auditorium, which should lie the biggest of Its kind In the United States. The city has ful filled that pledge, having put up a splendid stone, steel and brick struc ture, with a seating capacity larger than that of Madison Square Onrden, In New York. The Garden sents VI. 185, to be exact, while the Denver Au ditorium seats 12.500. This capacity Is far in excess of that of the great Mormon tabernacle at Salt Lake City, the Cincinnati Music hall, the Metro politan Opera House In New, York or the Auditorium or the Coliseum In Chi cago. : , The Denver Auditorium la built for fenerations, as Denver hopes to set' many more big conventions. It Is situ ated In the business center of the city. The. structure: contains 4,500,000 cubic feet of space and Is lighted by 5.000 sixteen candle power electric lights. Three million.; brick and '1.500 tons of teel were used In the construction. The 12,500 seats are all opera chairs, no cheap, wooden - affairs,- end there -la room for the placing of a considerable number of extra chairs In the Immense hall when occasion calls for them. As to exits, this hall -has .the rest of the United 8tates ssplng for air. Within two minutes the entire building csn be ti . i r 1 nil -nmsi sr- 11 v II K ! III - M 'i 1 ' "t&: M JOHN A. As to .Presidency and the vice presidency of ventilation, the Denver Auditorium I 'he United States. This will be the seems to surpass every known prede-1 twentieth national nominating conven cessor, for it has two great fans, each "on of the historic party, but the first ten feet In diameter, midway In the to meet In a city the site of which was house, to send cold air through the l barren plateau when the Democratic building, while there Is an exhaust fan ! The Denver promoters, however, de clare that the July climate Is so pleas antly cool that every delegate will tie able to sit comfortably In the hall with bis coat 011 Instead of lielng compelled, as at most conventions, to go "In thlrt sleeves" and with a handker chief nnder bis collar. Ignatius J. Dunn of Omaha Is the man selected b7 the Nebraska' delega tion to nominate William J. Ilryan for the presidency. Nothing In American life Is so Inter esting, so dramatic, so full of thrills, as a nstlonnl political convention. Denver folly realizes this fact and has determined to suply the delegates and Ihe thousands of visitors to the con vention of 1908 with an eitra series of thrills. This being, as stated, the first time that the Ilocky mountain platu has had the privilege of entertaining s national laxly of such Importance of world Importance, It may be said Denver proposes to let slip no oppor tunity to prove to the rest of the Unit ed States that the city In s pretty good pIsco to v.Ot In the good old summer time. There are, first of ill. the "Seeing now comprising the thriving city of Ix-nver were made In 1857. Originally the place was called fit. Charles, but 1 little later the name was changed In honor of iener.il James W. Denver, territorial governor of Kansas, which at that time Included the Colorado country. In 1859 the city received lta charter, and In 18"MJ tto first railroad connection with the rest of the world was made. In forty years Denver has grown from next to nothing to undis puted greatness. American energy, the precious metals and the Colorado cli mate have made Denver the metropolis of the Itocky mountain region and one of the most enviable cities In the world. It Is practically Impossible to discover snybody who once having seen Denver will speak III of the city. To most persons Denver and delight spell the Bame thing. Denver and determination also might lie said to vpcll tbe same thing, for the hustling repri'sentntlves of the Colora do capital were so determined to se (q)e this convention that they pledged the licimxTJitle national committee 1100.
