The report is replete with tables giving information as to the stream flow of the rivers of the Willamette valley including the Tualatin, Mol alla, Santiam, Clackamas, Luckia mute, McKenzie, Yamhill and other smaller streams. The tables give the average rainfall, the yearly and sum mer discharge of the streams, re sulting in almost Ideal conditions for perfect irrigation. Reservoirs Arc Promised. It is set forth that the Willamette valley is very easily irrigated. Reser voirs could be filled by the heavy winter rains and would supply the whole valley for the six or eight weeks wlten there is no rain. Districts are cited in Italy and in other parts of the world where the rainfall is almost as great as it Is in the Willamette Valley, but where Ir rigation is regarded as indispenslble. invariably the rainfall Is more even ly distributed than in the Willamette valley. Observations were made by Mr. Stover from the farms of Os wald West and Robert Gellatly near Corvallis; George Bagley and A. M. Stanton near Hillsboro, and Cocker- line & Howard near Albany. Upon these farms irrigation has been tried on a small scale. At Corvallis irri gated plats are taken side by side so that Mr. Stover s conclusions are ac curate. Dairying Possibilities Good. Dairying, Mr. Stover says, Is prob ably the coming Industry of the Wil lamette valley, but it can never be developed to Its fullest extent with out irrigation. According to the government expert irrigation is ab solutely necessary to prevent the val ley from becoming absolutely barren. Formerly the government directed Its efforts largely to the irrigation of large areas in the unsettled parts of the state, in order to attract settlers.
