"wT).KSIAV., Jl'XK :M, num. ElGKXi: KXTKHTA1XS MAXY VISITORS TODAY Eugene is today entertaining unr visitors, among them a large delegation of Portland businessmen. We trust that they have had a good time and enjoyed the hospiiality of or people to its fullest extent, but Bore than this, we hope that they hire seen many things ih the way of development and growth In the Willamette Valley of which they sere not aware before coming to Eu gene, tnose among mem wno nave tot been here since the new growth of the city and tributary country be- fti will realize the great changes that a few- years have made, from which an opinion may be formed of the great possibilities of the future. Such social visits as the one the Portland men are making here to dij are beneficial in many respects. In a business way the entire WiT limette Valley will always be largely dependent upon Portland enterprise, md that city's business men owe it alike to themselves and the slate it Urge to become aquainted with those sections, upon the derelop-j Bent of which Its future growth and greatness depends. On an occasion like this they become acquainted! with the people and learn of their I wishes and desires, their hopes and aspirations... They find such towns is Eugene being pushed ahead by tnteriu'ise and energy of their peo ple, and then discover the real reason for Portland's wonderful growth and prosperity. The larger this and other cities of the state grow, the more business there will lie for I'ori lind, the latter city growing only ns last as the development of lis trade area warrants. The conclusion is tba: the meropolls of the siale iaould aid in every way possible the efforts our people are making to ard building a city, confident that e must always pay tribute to l'ort !nd. and we believe that those busi ness men who are here today will rarry away a full realization of this fitt. 1 What we need most is harmony "J good feeling between all sec- 'loos of the state; to enhance our of fals to make a Greater Ore tM, In commerce, In wealth, in poll ution. And these exchanges of so cial courtesies tend only to promote 5i. fellowship and unselfish state' wide and patriotism. BKovKii ci.i:vrti..Xi, DKAl) KX-I'KKSIIU XT. (.rover Cleveland Is dead. If they . i'o college as in.practicabies a"al rule they will come out the same j A college develops, but does not "eate. It is an artificial inSiiiJ lion and not a supernatural one The question of going to college or not can only be solved by knowing the man or wnian, the college and the circumstancese incident to the case. Here, as in all cases, every tub must stand on its own bottom. Individuality must he consulted. Many persons will not take an edu cation any more than some coarse, rough stones will not take a polish. To attempt to educate them is to throw away time and money. It Is to encourage false ambitions and lo breed disappointments. On the con trary, supposing ihe possession of a good mind and character, there Is nothing that can add to lis power and usefulness like a college educa tion. Here the mind is taught to work. The foundation may be laid for all future growth and develop ment. A college education of the rislit kind and In the care of the right person is capital invested and well invested. 1: is not simoly a money investment, lnu also a mind and heart Investment, and brings pleasure and eiijoynn nt lo all sub sequent life. Hence go to college if it is practicable.
