In a personal letter from a friend
residing in Eugene, among other
things, be uses the following lang
uage In summing up the political sit
uatlon: "I was Just getting ready to
start back to my old home in Iowa
Tuesday evening, and then the news
came that the University appropria
tion had carried, and on the top of
that, the report that Cummins had
carried Iowa over Allison, and
backed out. I 'have thought of It
since, though. We used to laugh at
Kansas, and most everybody had the
Idea that politics down there was
three-fourths theory and the rest
whlBkers, but the Oregon brand
makes Kansas look like a deuce of
hearts in a bobtalled spade fluBh. An
Initiative and referendum measure
that means that the people of Ore
gon axe amusing themselves with a
lot of toy legislators, and Incidentally
paying them salaries, to make laws
that they expect later to romp in and
make mincemeat of, a re?all measure
by which any officer can be sent back
to the tall and uncut whenever he
tramps on an influential politician's
toes, a corrupt practices bill that jugs
you for giving a man a cigar on
election day, and, as a crowning in
sult a Democratic Senator from a
state of thirty thousand Republican
majority although there are dark
and bloody hints being promulgated
that such may not be the case. It Is
a shame the single tax measures
didn't pass It would ihave-harmonized
so well with the rest of the po
litical scenery. I think that after
this when I see a politician coming
down the street, I will take the oth
er Bide. I carry my change Ioobo in
my pockets, and wear my watch with
a fob, and so teel that I owe myself
some precaution.
There was a good deal of excite
ment in Eugene, over the university
appropriation measure, and for a
while it looked as if it were going to
be snowed under, but rallied at the
last and pulled through. We had
some campaign here, the wet and
dry question, and the ex-saloon keep
ers were a good deal worked up over
it for a while, but prohibition car
ried by a big vote."

WE STAXI) CORRECTED.
(Pendleton Tribune.)
The Eugene Guard has not given
pnofund study to the subject of cere
bral disorders. It takes a view of an
Important question which indicates a
shallow investigation. It says:
"Now that the people of Oregon
have voted In favor of scattering the
state institutions, Pendleton Is pul
ling for a branch asylum. Regretting
the. necessity of opposing as enter
prising town as the Umatilla metrop
olis, we feel it our duty to call at
tention to the fact that the asylum
should always be located in Linn or
Marlon counties, w.here its largest
patronage should come from."
But all experience shows witn un
failing directness that the surest
means of restoring mental disorders
is a removal from such environments
and conditions as were the prevailing
cause of the disarrangement.
It necessarily follows, therefore,
that Pendleton is the best place In
the state for a hopeful treatment of
the unfortunates referred to by the
Guard.
Umatilla county gave Cane over
300 majority.
Thinks It Saved His Life.
Lester M. Nelson, of Naples, Maine,
says In a recent letter: "I have used
Dr. King s New Discovery for years
for coughs and colds, and I think it
saved my life. I have found It a re
liable remedy for throat and lung
troubles, and would no more be
without a bottle than I would be
without food." For nearly forty
years New Discovery has been at the
head of throat and lung remedies. As
preventative of pneumonia and
healer of weak lungs it has no equal.
