JIXK 17, 11)08 CALIFORNIA VIEW OF OKEGOX ELECTION The Berkeley Reporter, one of the blest Republican newspapers of Cal ifornia, comments very Intelligently upon the result of the recent sena torial election In Oregon. Its conclu i tlons upon the growing Independence among all parties and classes of vot ers is well timed, and conforms to tie views enunciated by The Guard, when It adopted an Independent po litical policy, believing it to be In line with the progressive tendencies of the times, which are the outgrowth ot more pronounced individual action Mute mo .u i.iiiin ami tct for himself and to follow party leadership only so far as It agreed with his own inclinations and be liefs. The days of blind party alle giance have passed, and the work and utterances of such men as Roosevelt. Bryan and LaFollette have had much to do with bringing about such a Hate of mind among the American people. The Reporter says: "As the people of Oregon feel, so feel the electors in all parts of the country, and machine politicians may take heed to It. There is no doubt whatever that nine-tenths of the Re publicans would prefer free trade with the assurace of personal integ rity and ability in high office, to pro tection secured by the election of un trustworthy candidates, and that nine-tenths of the Democrats would prefer high protection with honest government to any other kind of a tariff with untrustworthy men in of llce. Fcr the present it is useless to Implore electors to vote for candi dates whom they do not like for the sake of "the. party." The one issue in American public life is honest ov ernmsnt, and It overpowers all other Issues. In this state, our candidates for of.'ice next fall must be men of known good character and clean af filiations, or they will not be elect ed if any other party offers h itir men. And they ought not to be. The People will demand personal charac ter be .'ore the triumph of protection or free trade, imperialism or anti- imperialism, (he Roosevelt policies or the Bryan policies. No man tainted 'lta unholy affiliations, or who is evidently backed by large camp-iign funds, whose source Is unknown, ought to be elected to any office, or lll be elected, if there is a clean man running, against him. Let us nave nothing else." It is announced that plans have been perfected in Kansas City for a religious campaign that will "touch" every part of the world. We have known some "touching" revivalists ourselves In our time and we doubt If Kansas City can produce anything more adept along this line.
