Evening R.c ord, makes some of the most remark able statements regarding Oregon we hate ever read in an Eastern paper and we have come across some pretty glaring instances of misrepresenta tion and ignorance in the past. Here la a sample of Mr. McLean's Informa tion (?) imparted to his old friends and neighbors in Michigan: "I have seen potatoes in Eugene, Or., from six to eight inches high, frozen to the ground while I was there. So when they tell you that they don't have frost they are mista ken, and I am sorry to say that on the ISth of May Haey had the misfor tune to have five inches of snow, and some places it was reported there ere IS inches. This is 'Oregon, the Beautiful.' "In the Willamette valley lanj sells lor from $175 to $300 per acre, and this same land is run out so that you can hardly make a living off of it un- liss a man has means to stock it., hope nn.l pray that the Aldrirh-Vroe-farther north, between Everett and land emergency currency lull will Bellingham, Washington, land (I mean improved land) runs from $12.") to $2000 per acre. So you see that It would cost something to buy a home there. , The unimproved land can be bought for from $50 per acre op." No serious attempt will be made to answer thsse statements, because It il impossible to make a. good nr- gunient against a liar when ,;ne sticks to the ti'tttu himself. This cold weather story is so absurd that we suspect the author must be a writer of fiction of the Elder Haggard va- riety, who fcr once allowed his im- asinatlon full sway, . knowing that those wha read his article would bej thousands of milts away from the' ne of action. Suffice it to say that MIy once for a few hours during the Mst winter were the people of Eu- Kne treated to a sight of snow, that "Kited as it fell, and that no freez-1 '"6 weather tfas recorded here during entire winter. Only a few niorn los showed even a "white frost"for the benefit of early risers. Mr. .McLean's land value story is n a par with his weather Informa ,;on and averages a few hundred per WU too high, but what could you ex Pt from one who evidently came eat determined to find fault, even if nad to stretch his imagination to Jl) It, for he says In closing his let ter: "Ad 1 would say to all farmers K"i'l;ing necilili. to stav bv .Vlt !i- n, our Michigan, the pride of the ".'Ml. fte t,f Oregon Invite honest, impa: - t,l Criticism, and do not 'believe our flimate and soil in lw. a iiio.ni inio. i - ii011S. fr Mile na I,., ct.i.l of CO wontrv on earth, but Mr. Mt Lean "eionii tiie nne 0f criticism and 'aders a section of our cutiinion ""try that presents wonderful ad- '"aes, and Is s a young tn ,,, , u 'HOlmiellt as It In wonderful ill the fct.iMn.. r-'Otlitics for profitable Investment. . With the election m, r and thf a sutancc of a great cherry and bern erup, the people of all Oregon shoul 1 "get busy" and advertise ni.ne than ever before, says the Portland Cham ber of Commerce Bulletin. Official announcement from the nited States treasury says the emer gency national bank notes will l,e ready by July 1. As long as they are always ready and never Issued there will be no kicking. When you find a person with time to worry about the danger from germs you find one in need of a long course of hard work, which Is a never-falling remedy for linaginnrv trou bles. Those who have the idea that noth ing could knock out a vaudeville ac tor were wrong. One of them was frightened to death by a fire in a Cleveland theatre. Anyway, the University of Oregon appropriation carried. In those pans of the state where the people knew of its work good majorities were return ed In Its favor. Whether It Is god or bad. It is ip to ihe people of this country never be prnctically tested. Perhaps If assured that they would drop Into a $25,0110 a year legal Job. as Minefield, of Maine, has done.uth er lawyers in congress might be tempted to resign. AN UNUSUAL MAN. This Is about a man who tried to do right and was true to bis convictions. Incidentally lie made and lost mil lions. A few days ago Ferdinand Sehu nuicher of Clinton, O., passed nway. He was the pioneer in the breakfast food Industry in the United States. Fifty-two years ngo Mr. Schumacher came to Akron from (lermany. Ho began to prepare oats for (be table by sbelllng. cultltig and cooking them. In side of twenty years be bad four big mills working night ami day to supply Ihe demand for bis cereals. other coii'pnnies Imitated Sebumii. eher. nn 1 the l-el'tstry grew until It ! i. lis ni e. by llie trust. Mr Sehuinin In-r did not undcr-l iinl Ihe Ins and tens of "liig:i lluiinee ' nn.l In ism. nner uial.Iiig an assignment, he left the American Cereal eollii:ill.v Though at one time a millionaire, be died with nothing. Ills riienils say be was manipulated out of bis money. Anyway. Ihe man himself, and nut his millions, is the Important consid eration. Schumacher was one of llie original Prohibitionists of the country, and. what Is more, be practiced what be believed. An Instance: Wbeu his Immense cereal mills at Akron burned In 1SSH, lurge quantities of gruin In his elevators became wet nnd sprouted. The breweries wanted to purchase the damaged grain for dis tilling purposes. Mr. Schumacher re fused to sell the grain, preferring to lose rather than have the Bluff uiado Into intoxicants. Quixotic? possibly. Hut It proves the stamp of tl nin. What be believed be believed with nil bis might, nnd be stood rendy to fiiffer for the cause be bad espoused.
