PORTLAND HOSE
FESTIVAL IS
WELL ATTENDED
(Special Correspondence.)
Portland, Or., June 1. The Port-
lanj liuse Festival opened with all
Portland In a holiday humor, flower
wreathed windows and roses In evi
dence everywhere. Thousands of
visitors from outside pom lb are In the
city, and Incoming crowds are greet
ed by an immense Arch of Welcome
erected at the approach of the Un
ion Station. The Mosquito Fleet lies
at anchor In the harbor, an excursion
of over 100 people, under the aus
pices of the Sacramento Valley De
velopment League, arrived this morn
ing from the South. Washington Is
sending generous delegations add an
excursion Is expected from Lewiston,
Idaho, tomorrow morning.- The
whole Northwest feels that In addi
tion to the Innumerable purely attra
tlve features of the celebration, the
event Ib a marvelous advertisement
of the climatic conditions, for no
where else in the world can flowers
be found more beautiful than the
rosea of the North Pacific Coast. The
grand parades will exceed anything
ever shown on ' trie Coast, and be
sides all the leading towns of Oregon,
and Washington, will be represented
In the floats and decorated vehicles.
When the Oregon Development
League recently asked the co-operation
of the state In making a compre
hensive exhibit of the products of the
Pacific Northwest, heartiest assuran
ces of help came from every quarter
but before definite arrangements
could be completed the Trustees of
the Commercial Club Building were
offered a five year' rental of $21,
000 for the exhibit room and felt
compelled to accept this In Justice to
the stockholders. But the officers
of the League say that their plan will
yet materialize.
Both the "Pacific Monthly" maga
zine and "Sunset" appear, as special
Rose Festival numbers for -June.
Nothing proves the activity of Ore
gon and Washington communities so
forcibly as a glance through the ad
vertising sections of these Coast-pub-Ushed
magazines.
Manufacturers in all parts of the
United States seem to be taking a
new Interest In the Investigation of
conditions here In the Northwest,
nnd especially Is this true of the fac
tory which represents a moderate in
vestment. iFrom every city of any size on the
Coast -delegates have come to Port
land to attend the session of the Pa
cific Coast Ad Men's Association. It
Is being held in the Convention Hall
of the Commercial Club Building,
and the Association will enjoy a
unique dlonner at the Club tonight;
their banquets are probably the most
unusual and Interesting given by any
convention they have been com
pared to similar affairs of the famous
Grid-Iron Club of. Washington and
since the. Portland Ad Men. claim to
have the largost Advertising Club in
America, they are making, special ef
fort, as hosts. . )
A communication went out last
week from the Portland Cbmmerclal
Club to the organizations of tho state!
asking tor a supply of literature Is
sued by each community. ' Special
files of these' publications are kept
for the information and benefit of
newcomers, who naturally come to
the larger cities first and to whom
uch a distributing bureau will be of
the utmost advantage. The whole
Pacific Northwest Is iucluded in
scope of this work.

GREAT INTEREST
LOCALLY IN THE
ELECTION RETURNS
Greater interest is being taken lo
cally in this election ttian in any for
years. Judging from tho crowds on
the streets and around The Guard's
bulletin boards eager to learn the
latest news of returns.
The entire county Republican tick
et 1b elected by good majorities ex
cept the sheriff, Hurry Bown getting
in by several hundred, although it is
hard to estimate his majority owing
to the slowness of the work of count
ing the ballots in the large precincts.
It will be some time this evening be
fore all the ballots, cast in the Eu:
gene precincts will have been count
ed. A good many of the outside re
turns are inenough to tell that the
county Is dry again, this time by per
haps 300 majority. The University
of Oregon appropriation will carry In
Eugene by about 1500, very few
votes being cast against it here. Some
of the country precincts however are
about evenly divided on the question,
while others give the appropriation a
good majority. According to mes
sages received here this afternoon
from Portland the indications are
that the appropriation will carry.
F. T. Plank, Republican, Is again
elected constable of the Eugene dis
trict by a good majority over George
Croner, the Democratic nominee.
Constable Plank's majority is
probably 300.
R. S. Bryson is elected justice of
the peace again over Geo. W. Klnsey,
the Democratic nominee.
