REPUBLICANS HOLD
RALLY AT SPRINGFIELD
The Republicans had a big rally
at Springfield last night, many at
tending from Eugene, and the Mili
tary band of this city was engaged
for the occasion. L. E. Bean, candi
date for representative, was the first
speaker at the meeting, and he watt
followed by W. W. Calkins, Mr. i
Bean's running mate on the legisla-l
tive ticket. Allen H. Eaton. Repub-j
Mean and Statement No. 1 candidate,
then spoke. Hon. S. M. Yoran, of j
this cHy, was also on the program
for an address and 'he delivered hlsi
usual strong speech in favor fit Re-1
publican principles. The meeting j
was successful in every particular., I
and the several candidates are con
fident they won many friends among i
the audience. I
Eaton's remarks were ot special
interest because he explained his.
position upon Statement No. 1. He!
stated that 'ae recievetf the Democrat-,
ic nomination, but that at the prop-,
er time he refused the nomination. ,
That the so-called Statement No. 1 i
ticket published in the county papers
was unauthorized by him, and that1
at his request his name had been
dropped from that ticket in the pa-
pers. Mr. Eaton then requested all,
Republican voters, and especially
Statement No. 1 Republicans, to give
their support to the entire Kepuhli-
can legislative ticket. He asserted
that the statement was not an issue!
at this time mat tnat issue naa
been settled at the Republican primaries.

TWO REPORTS UPON
WOOD PULP TARIFF i
(Continued From Pago One.)
w-otild seem to Indicate that the tem
porary suspension or entire removal
of the present ttuiff would not have
any great Immediate, effect and If the
tariff is removed at any tlmo it
should bo coupled with the right of
free exportation of wood pulp from
the Canadian forests. The removal
of the tariff on print pnper and wood
pulp, if followed by an export duty
im pulp wood coming from Canada.
would probnbly result In a considera
ble Increase 111 the price of print pa
per and an early drain of the pulp
wood forests of the United States.
"It would seem that the publish
ers, to be assured of the low price
tor paper, should maintain mills In
the United States. Any policy that
would give the Cnnndlan mills a pref
erential advantage over the Amer
ican mills on obtaining the raw mate
rial nt a low price must Inevitably re
sult In the dismantling of the Amur-
lean mills, and the ultimate depend
ence of Amerlcnn publishers upon
Caadlan'mllls.
"1'nder these conditions Canada
could levy export duties on print pa
per that would result In enhanced
prices without the presence of com
petition from Amerlcnn manufactur
ers. .

bought fifty thousand cords of pulp
wood at Quebec, nnd Introduced n
