HAM) SAWS Hl'l'IMANT Till) UlU'UI.AIl OXKS Many of the lnrger snwmills of California aro now employing "bnnd' saws instead of circular saws. Bnnd saws aro proving especially advan tageous in the sawing of big logs, as tney ao the work more Quickly ana with far less waste than the circular saws. These band saws are long rll , bonB of stool, from six to eight inch es in width, operate over largo- pul leys above and below, the upper mil ioy being locatod directly over the lower. The principle on which these uws operate Is exactly like that of the small band, saws employed In , planing and finishing mills. Th snwB are nocessarlly thin, and made of tho vory toughest stoel. Knch has , a dally capacity of from 30,000 to ' 40,000 feet, and requires from 2f to 40 per cent less power than .circular Haws of the minus capacity, lo pre vent heating n small stream of water Is continually played upon the bnnd saw. At first there was considerable 'hesitancy In adopt lug them, us they were conKldered extremely dangerous oil account of their liability to break It has been leund, however, thn there Is no more danger of the! breaking than tha! of the clrcula saw. Unllko tho circular saw, tho band saw carries Its own teeth, these being a part of tho saw Itself. Knch mill must therefore be provided with several extras, so that these may bo in the process of Hhiirpeulng and set ting while tho other Is at work. K.VSY TO (TICK cvr.wtitii.
