He serves his country best Who joins the tide that lifts her nobly on; For speech has myriad tongues for every day, And song but one; and law within the breast Is stronger than the graven . law on stone There Is a better way. He serves his country best, Who lives pure life and doeth 4 righteous deed, And walks straight paths, however others stray, And leaves his sons, as utter- most bequest, A stainless record, which all men may read This is the better way. Susan Coolidge. i. t ' i $' I I ; iKIGKXE HONORED J BY STATE CHANGE 1 Eugene is entertaining today a ? large number of delegates to the state f grange, and we trust that all our peo ple will do their part toward mak jlng their stay pleasant and profitable. 2 Toe grange Is an organization that Is dolng a great deal of practical good J; lor Its members, by arousing interest ln progressive farming and bringing its members Into closer touch with inch other, enabling them to ex change views and experiences, aa well fi providing a forum for the full dls cusston of questions of public con Irsrn. 1 The grangers number among their Jmembers many of the most intelll fgent, progressive and prosperous clt I liens of the state and Eugene was honored In being selected of the pluce for their state meeting. il'AKKY OCT STIJKET IM'.MtOVKMKXT Pl.AXS That is an excellent idea to pave a black wei;t from Willamette street on Fifth and Sixth streets. jThis. with the proposed pavement .of Joilve street and about the county Sharks, will practically cover the bus llners part of the city and strangers who visit Eugene will naturally be jeiven the impression that the entire jci'.y is paved. There will not be a jmuddy cross street next winter be tween the railroad depot and Tenth 'street, and It wouldn't be a bad Idea 'to pave a block either side of Willain Jette on Tenth, so as to make the fpaved district extend entirely to KipVPnth a..A,. M.KInl. t in hn f, !1 VO ll ifrom Willamette to the railroad jjcrossing at the University, a dis tance of eleven blocks. Street improvement Is doing more to enhance the growth of Eugene fin anything else at the present it'tne, and It would be a wise thing to Icompieie tne work .nis year while i'"e plant Is here. Property owners could make no better Investment, as he enterprise of Eugene in this re spect Is already being spread over the jntire Northwest, and daily attract- '"R well-to-do home seekers, who ir buying or building residences nil becoming permanent resi lent of P I'niverslty city. WW ItKPAP.TMKXT J is hadi.y m:i:dld 1 The Oakhnd Enquirer thinks that ?he bill introduced. It is absurd government with such va-t J"ir,i(ii.it,)nj of Its transportation 8 rests and otf.nt Li iru i, nl, lie 1 j TtIKSDAY, MAY IS, 1908 J THE BETTER VAY a as to d,.ai Impor tant Dla!Trrs thr0URh dl,llarlnlen:s i which are overloaded with bus!is ' Congressman Raadell. in ,,..: ing his bill, denied any Intention o i criticising the engineering corps ot the army, but said he dU blame con gress fur putting upon thai curps a i 'nondescript method of river and i"",rM mat is ansolute- ly Impracticable." It Is utterly ab surd that the construction work of this country has to be done in a roundabout way through the army department. Representative Randell well said that the work of the river and har bor improvement should be taken away from the army englne-'rs and placed in the hands of competent ci vilians. The transportation Interests of the country are certainly of suffi cient Importance to warrant the cre ation of a departmelnt co-ordinate with the war department, the treas ury department, the department of agriculture and tie d; panuu-nt of commerce and labor. Eugene, with its paved streets well swept, arches of multi-colored lights through the business section, and gay bunting and pennants waving to the breeze, presents a beautiful picture to the hundreds of visitors from all over the state. Only a lack of rooms for housing visitors properly pre vents Eugene from becoming the pop ular convention city of the state. Judge Landis got In a fining humor again the other day and soaked a bunch of railroads J13.150, In amounts ranging from $100, for vi olating the safety appliance law, to $6300, for violating the cattle trans portation law, all ot which seems to prove that all the railroads are not being good. A suffragette, armed with a big dinner bell, forced Winston Churchill, the English politician, to sklddoo, in stead of making a speech to a big meeting. As the open season for spell-binding Is upon us, we shudder to think of the possibility of the adoption of the dinner bell Idea over here. Dan Sully, who wont "busted" a few years ago trying to be the cotton king, has duplicated the trick In try ing to be the soap king, which ought to convince him and his kind that this Isn't a good time for American kings, crowned or uncrowned. The adage that "a shoemaker's family never wears good shoes" was called to mind by a decision of the Pennsylvania supreme court declar ing the will of the late chief Justice of that court, drawn by himself, In valid. Everybody can now safely loosen up. Hetty Green, who moved last winter to reduce her rent from $23 to $19 a month, has moved again this time to a swell hotel, where she Is paying $30 a day for accommoda tions. There are now correspondence schools for about everything else, and we are confidently expecting to get a bunch of literature from one which promises to each an easy and cheap way of getting divorced while you wait. In spite of the trouble which befell those who have In the past attempted to pull off the stunt, a bunch of daring Chicago speculators are again trying to get rich quick by cornering the corn market. If the able inventors who nr.! burn ing midnight oil trying to make dia monds, would turn their attention to beef they might expect to receive more wishes for their success. KYtravacan: nralse of poverty by a rich bank president reminds us that poverty Is a mighty good thing provided that you can look back a! i:. Thou wast born with the blush of morning, With Its radiant glory and light, While the dawn with Its beauty adorning, Lies enthralled In thy form so bright, 'Tis the love of the Maker thou bearest. Just a message of hope and of cheer, And as pure as thy perfume is rarest Is the song thou art singing here. Oh, thy pctnls are red as the blushet On the cheeks of a sweet rustic maid. When the warm flood of love sweepB and rushes While the first words of love, soft aro said, Thou are glorious, passionate, glow ing. In thy heart burns a sensuous fire; And my love for you ever Is growing, , While my muse dost thou ever in spire. j Like the mornlng'B fresh crystals of dew. Like the stars In the deep silent night. Are thy petals of white rose, so true. Are thy petals, so pure and so white; ' In thy breast lie the unwarmed ( snows, And subdued Is the fierce tropic heat Of desire. And thy heart's spirit knows Naught of sin, but of love, chaste and ' sweet. In this beautiful, golden Westland. 'Neath the blue of our sun-kissed , skies. Thou art crowned as our queen, fair nnd grand; And thy smile do we over most priz, 'Tis our love and our pride, and our boast, 'Tis the Queen where the great water flows. And with pleasure, we drink to this toast : "To the glorious Oregon Hose." DOW A IT K.MS f Special Corresjiondence. ) Imna, May 12.
