WEBXESDAY, APRIL 20, 1908 "' " '' (HUMS STAKK 1,0 HAMPER- UNIVERSITY I The Daily Astorlan discusses the U. m 0. appropriation and the referen dum movement of the Linn county 'tnnse as follows: "It is all very well to be careful of jibe public funds in this day of extrav sjance and graft, but legitimate ends joust be served with a liberality that, II least, will not cripple them, nor disparage them at the crucial nio ioent of their highest faculty for pub lic service. 'Watchdogs' have been lno'n to overdo the thing, time and ajaln, to the utter negation of the aesl good for which they were put in klice, or 'which they assumed to turd: and we are inclined to think lit the Linn county 'grange is work- in; its stunt to a degree that will leave the state of Oregon cheapened nd discredited, if it Is to have its my wlih these appropriations. Oregon grows apace; the years and the people, and her own ampli fied future, are demanding more of her than was essential Jn the old and tarly days, and on these especial lines the must range along with the states of her size and class and do her best nd full duty by her sons and daugh- ers, as well, as by the country at large. It will not do to stop at the jdollar-marke every time It is hoisted 'aloft by some narrow prejudice or conservatism. As we shall pro- tide for our young, so shall they honor and protect the land when the crises of their day Bhall arise; and we have no right to fore-shorten the iplrit or capacity 'Wherewith they Ml go at it." The label "Made in Ore gon" used as conspicuously on heinc made goods will do a like Service for this state, if you are manufacturing anything, label it "Made in Or.ui." Surely that $1C3.Mim),iii0 pension hill reported to the senate ought u inuke the jingnvs go slow talking up another war. Just think what a howl would greet a new proposition for an annual tax of 2 a head on Hie entire population. And now political wiseacres have discovered that the reason why Pres ident Roosevelt wishes Secretary Tafl elected as his successor is because Secretary Taft has promised to make him superintendent of the Panama canal construction. DeSagan's devotion to a pretty girl while crossing the Atlantic Is taken by some of his fellow passengers as evidence that he is not yet married. The world, however, will draw an op posite conclusion from the same premise. The Ancient Order of Hibernians didn't seem to have their senatorial "pull" on straight, as the arbitra tion treaty 'With Great Dritain, which it sent a delegation to Washington to oppose, has been ratified by the senate. According to the railroad magnates the proper way to bring back pros perity is to hoist the freight rates. This recalls the man who charged J2 each for sandwiches because he "needed the money." An Alabama editor has announced that he will fish this summer with nothing but artificial files. Are we to understand that prohibition has cut off his customary fishing accom paniment? It will be noticed that the gentle men who are claiming that the pres idential business is all over but the shouting for their man, are still hust ling as hard as members of a football team. .1. Thoburn Itoss and State Treas urer Steel are such good friends that It would be positive cruelly to sepa rate them by sending only one to the penitentiary. Well, anyway, the short men whose girls wear cart-wheel hats will not have to carry umbrellas this summer to preserve their complexions. This amusing photograph of President Roosevelt on board a "ship of ths desert" was tuude in lxiudou and reproduced in Sketch. Tbe pajHT bumor eusly referred to it as a sntiiuthot taken while tbe president was on one of bis bunting trips. It Is not, however, a matter of record that Mr. Hoosevclt ever Tode a camel. The fnct Is that Sketch's artist took n photograph of President Hoosevclt on horsetuick and substituted a patient cnmel for the horse. Because of the absence of -demand in the east, local dealers have further reduced their bids to IS to IS He Buying is slow at this price. Conditions in the east are thus described In the Boston Commercial Bulletin In Its latest. Issue; There Is not even a ripple to dis turb tbe calm placidity of a market absolutely without activity. Busi ness is almost at a standstill, for manufacturers are not "receiving or ders fur goods, while at the same time it is understood that they have substantial slocks of hair still un used in their mills. However, prices show no material change, although quotations are only nominal in the absence of actual trading. Foreign advices state that Brad ford is flat, with nothing doing. Cape firsts hnvo been freely offered for sale, but no business resulted. It Is considered uncertain when Im provement in the situation will be noticeable. In Constantinople values are being held In abeyance, owing to the lack of activity, while Cape firsts are es pecially depressed. Hair is still arriving at the primary American markets, but eastern deal ers are displaying little or no Inter est In the arrivals. At the present time there Is a variance between prices wanted by growers and those dealers are willing to pay. lUVIXi; ITEMS ( Sp-clal Correspondence. I Irving, April 2S M. P.
