It waa a good Hlzed crowd that saw the game, the ' bleachers and grandstand being fill- luit ('ulluiru r.mva wna Invnl In thp team, having lent some thirty or for ty rooters along with them. The day waa an ideal one for baseball and all good plays were eagerly applauded. Baker, who pitched for the Grove, did good work at times, but was rath er wild. Errors were scarce, there being only three for the Grove and two for the Blues. Sherwood at first and Nnxon at second did the best playliir f"" the visitors. Murphy, the slab artl't fi- the-Blues, performed very c t i 'y. He has five assists credited V 'lit without an error. He stopped two grounders that brought forth groat applause from tho grand stand. Smith at second accepted 1 1 ounces without an eror, while Chandler and Anderson carried off the batting honors, each mnn getting two hits. Next Sunday the Blues will play elt.her Albany or Ooburg. For tho good name of Oregon in the world of letters, and to preserve the Interest of her own people In her chief educational Institution, that appropriation of $125,000 for the University of Oregon must stand; the people themselves must rally to the safety and perpetuation of one of the fittest schools on the Pacific elope and they alone must avert the dis credit which will surely attach to the state If she shall turn this thing down. A state cannot afford to cheapen Its own Institutions. Nor can It afford to use tne law of the referendum for accentuating Its stupidity and parsimony. That law was framed and put in operation to save the people from public theft and public disorders of pronounced evil Import; not to be used aa a means for discounting the intelligence and pride of the people. Ten-fold that amount, for such a purpose, should not be met wHh a negative vote In the state of Oregon. - The money is h-oneBtly needed and will be honestly spent, and tranBce,nd8 in Importance and urgency anything now before the Oregon electorate, just as It transcends hundreds of oth er appropriations that In the past have been made for shameless and undented graft. If the good name of Oregon as a champion of higher ed ucation, and all Its concomitant pub lic values, Is to he bargained off for the pitiful sum of $125,000, then we are. Indeed, at a crisis. ' But It will not be brought to such a conclusion. The people are proud of tho University, proud of the state, proud of their ability to maintain both -on modern levels, and the ap propriation will be granted generr ously In June, with more to come la ter. But this conviction must not load nny one to the neglect of voting "aye" when the timd comes. VAMKV CITIKS IN I.10AI) (Salem Statesman.) The Pendleton East Oregonlun takes exception to the statement that the towns In Eastern Oregon need a general awakening In the matter of boosting and refers to the fact that Pendleton leads Salem and Eugene In the street paving movement. This may be true, but the Willamette val ley cities will before the close of 1908 have more paved streets than Pendle ton will during the next decade or longer. .Then, too, the Western Ore gon cities are so far ahead of those east of the Cascades in tho wny of modern business activity that tho comparison w,ould be very odious.
