to Statement No. 1 are 33 Republican
nominees and nine or ten hold-over
state senators. This total of 42 or 43
almost reaches the 49 votes needed in
the legislature to elect a United
States senator.
Democrats are now surveying the
state to see whare they have a good
chance of defeating anti-Statement
No 1 Republican nominees for the
legislature. Such nominees, if elect
ed, would not vote for Chamberlain
for United Stales senator even though
though he were the "people's choice."

Democrat. Hence Chamberlain's fol

followers are jubilant over the pros

L. W. Coe, a recent arrival from
Medford, has bought the L. H. Cren-.

of East Fifteenth street and Moss av
enue in Fairmount for $3000. J"he
Garrett Real Estate Company made
the deal. Mr. Coe has also bought the
F. S. Smith 100-acre farm three miles
northeast of Eugene for $10,000. He
recently sold his farm at Medford at
a good price, and liking Eugene and
vicinity more than Medford as a place
of residence, concluded to locate here.
Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Matlock re
turned last evening from Cot
tage Grove, where they attended
the funeral of Mrs. Matlock's broth
er, Allen Johnson, who was run over
and killed by a train there Friday
night. The young man was one of a
party that went to Creswell to attend
a skating carnival. In some manner
ho fell off the rear of the train and
his head was badly crushed and his
right arm broken. He was ta,ken to
a nearby house and later died from
his injuries. He was aged 13 years
and was the son of William Johnson,
a merchant of Cottage Grove.
