N. Roney yesterday received from the Portland, Kuene .& Eaat ern Hallway Company the contract for building the treatle work for the lCtiKene-Hprlngfield trolley line along tho hottntn from Judklns' Point east to the Willamette river at Spring field. He went to the head of the Springfield mlllrnec today to look at one of the Booth-Kelly Company's donkey engines there with a view of securing one with which to operate his pile driver, and If any of thetn suit him he will move it at once to .Imlkiiis' Point, where the work will begin. The hammer for tha plledriver has been delivered, nnd the machine will be rigged up at once. There will bo practically 400(J feet of trestle work on the line along the bottom, divided Into seven stretches, with short fills between them. The long est stretch will be over 1300 feet. Over 400,000 feet of lumber and over 1000 piles will be used In the con struction of the trestle Tho first stretch of trestle, 600 feet long, beglnlng at the point, will be finished up first and the track laid on It so that tho materials for the fill and tho next trestle may be hauled on cars over the completed track. The contract requires that the work of building the trestle shall be kept ahead of tho track construction work. and Mr. Honey thhlnks ho will be able lo almost finish the entire job before tho track layers reach the trestle if they go no faster than they are at present. It . Is probable, however. that the'COinpany will soon put on a large force of men nnd complete the track to the point In a short time. The Springfield llridge. Mr. Honey, who has the contract for building the bridge across the Willamette at Springfield, says he will not comnfence on that structure until the trestle is completed. Ma terials for Its construction can then be hauled over the trnck on cars, greatly facilitating the work. ANOTHER STEAM ROLLER ARRIVES FOR PAVING WORK Another steam roller arrived In Eugene Sunday for the Warren Con struction Company nnd was unloaded from the cur today. It will be used In place of the old roller on tho pave ment, nnd the old one will be taken to East Eleventh street to pull the plow. The new roller came from Sa lem, where the company has a con tract to pave several streets, but tho work there lfl'Ued up for some reason or other and may not begin again for several weeks. Tho addition of the new roller to tho work lu Eugene will facllllato It greatly. Tho work on West Eighth street Is progressing rapidly, and the two blocks on that street will be finished up this week If tho weather remains good. NMntlt street will be tho next to bo paved. Hi: KILLED HIMSELF Crazed with respondent because he had been Jilted by his betrothed, Custer Dinwiddle, of Hold Hill, yes terday morning at 2:15 sent the, charge of a shotgun crashing through his head while lying in bed beside his sleeping brother, Wlllard Dinwid dle, at his home four and a half miles east of Mt, Angel. ; Drawing the gun up under the cov ers along side of him. he placed the muzzle against the upper part of the chin and pulled the trigger with his thumb or finger, the charge going up through the head and coming out of the right temple and lodging In the opposite wall and door, spattering the wall and door with blood and brains. Besides the two brothers, Mrs. Wlllard Dinwiddle and a lady friend were In the room. Startled out of their slumbers by the shot, the women screamed, and, to add to the confusion it was some time before Wlllard could find a match to light the lamp which stood on an adjoining chair. But It needed no light to show what had happened. The gurgling of the blood from the gaping wound In the throat of the suicide told the terror-stricken trio that a terrible- tragedy had been en acted. Salem Statesman.
