The date men- i Is that upon which Senator fnipeaks here, and the article in pirn is a bitter attack upon his unaer mo neauiutr, "senate s-ablss," showing that there is crgaaiied campaign directed ps: the senator, and that close i is kept of Ms movements and iking dates. The Guard does not He article referred to because simply a repltition of Francis H'aey'a charges, which are gen- J known, containing nothing and whl;h will be reviewed by falton in his address, we'under- 1- Filrthernuiro :,a r. The lady brought out one of the creations not long since simply aa a pmauti.,n. ary measure to present the sun from shining on her fair countenance ami straightway all lha women in tiv land that saw the mountain of s:ra,v. fruit, flowers and ribbons went, surk mad and vowed they must have duplicate not later than Easter Sun day. The Countess Szecheiiyi some people get the name by sim ply sneezing, but you should pro nounce it chen-yl, which is not a line from a Chinese primer, but the name Gladys received In exchange for her own good American name and -millions Is the cause of much expense tothe heads of the house holds of this country, but seeing this is really her fii;st offense vj shall be compelled to excuse here for this one time. Anna Gould has' informed us that she Is going to marry the Prince De Sagan, no matt what the balance of the world thinks about it. Well, it is up to Anna. The newspapers of the United States and her bi-otli.r George have d ine all tiny can t.i break up .the mati-h, but if she will have him, that's the end of the sub-j ject. . But there Is one eonsolaliim in the whole affair, and that is she will have to live with the worthless scion of French nobility until she Is separated from him by the divorce courts, which doubtless will not be very long. Yesterday the Guard printed he "hevs, wired from its Washington bureau, that bids for the construc Son of gugene's new postoffice building wfJje opened XI 9. No other paper inregon has yet had this news, probtSMv because The Guard's facilities for .'gicuring jSttch news are more perfect than (hat of any of l?s ri vals. In addklon to its retSilnr Asociated Press service, it has spe cial representatives at Washington and other points who see that it gets promptly the news that is of special Interest In Its particular field. The good Lord save us from ship wreck, famine and flood and Tom Lawson. The most of us are Immune from all the former evils, but nothing can save the people from that' carp ing hypocrite. There was a time not long since when he promised to quit and ke?p still, but now he has broken :ut. asain with a n:w harangue and on the same subject. lint perhaps he may grow old some time and die, though tills Is hardly probable. Sam Gompei-3 says Congressman LIttelefield resigned because of a yeT low streak that caused him to fear a licking next full. .Maybe so, but if our memory Is not at fault it oas Sam who got the licking the last scrap 'they had. a Whll ! the railroads cannot furnish them free passes, ?nembers of the United States supreme court could doubtless secure the use of any mag nate's private car by dropping the vaguest hint that it was desired. "Reasonable pipits" are what wo think the other fellow should make on what we buy. Any talk about what profits we should make on what we sell is Impudent meddling will! privatu business. Is one essential sadly neglected, that ' is, a good fire alarm system. I We have a splendid fire depnrt-j ment, maintained at some expense, 1 but It Is handicapped in rendering the best of service, or service they could , render, due to the fact that, we have! no reliable way of locating a fire. This has been demonstrated on sev-; eral occasions. .Fire was in a cer-; tain locality and the fire fighting ap paratus ran In another direction. By ' tills time tile team was exhausted and the fire had done Its damage. On an other occasion hadthu fire not. hap-. pened in the day time, and willing; hands with buckets being on the; scene In time, It would have meant a oss of several thousand dollars. All of these misunderstandings, In I location were due to the unreliable: "phone" or other indirect system. i We need a fire alarm system, ! whereby a fire can be located accu-; rately, and avert all this unnecessary, loss of time and expense caused by a crude system of sending in alarms. We have a pretty heavy city tax, and nro trying to Improve our town.1 instead of investing money or all oft our money Into something that 13 not. really necessary, we should turn our j attention to some improvements that would be of some worth to our tax payers, and give us belter fire pro-, lection.
