Williams Mfif Co., props., KAIMtOAl) SKI.I.S KUMAINOiat OF GIIA.VT The following dispatch appeared In t-he Oregonlan today from its wasn Ington correspondent: Washington, March IS. It Is be lieved In government circles that a se cret contract has been made by the Oregon & California Railroad Com pany, under which it has agreed to, sell the remaining 2,000.000 acres of Its grant to one single purchaser, and that a large sum of money has been paid to the railroad company on ac count by the purchaser. The atten tlon of a representative of the Booth- Kelly Company, who has been con tending for the Innocent-purchaser amendment to the Fulton resolution, was today called to this report, and he remarked: "Then whoever has purchased this land ought to be pro tected like the rest of us," merely showing that the lumber companies would be willing that the govern ment should make any sacrifice in order to give them a sound title whore they now hold a shaky one. This Incident will he related to the public lands committee tomorrow.' The lumbermen left for home to day, pretty well dlshheartened. They were confident when they came here that they would havo an easy fight, but developments before the com mittee were somewhat surprising to them, and privately, they admit that they are defeated. Nevertheless It Is expe-cted that an attempt will be made when the resolution goes into the house to secure the adoption of the innocent ' purchasers' amendment If the committee reportB the resolu tion as it jiasscd the senate.
