The cause of thin rush of mall is the floods that have prevailed in Eastern Oregon along the line of the O. It. & X. railway over which all of the Eastern mall comes to Oregon. The waters have subsided during the past two days and the trains have teen able to re sume their regulur schedules al though In some places the tracks are In bad shape and slow time is neces sary. , i The Da es Chronicle or Tuesday glves some Idea of the extent of the trouble In the following news story: "A few trains are being put on rue, run over the O. ft. & X. lines which have been tied up for the past few days owing to the rains which caused landslides and washouts In several places between Portland and the mountains east of Pendleton. Train lervlce has been at a standstill un til yesterday, when a lo.al train serv ice was established between Portland and Pendletsn. A train was sent out from Portland on a local schedule. and ran as far as Pendleton. Another train was made up here and went to Portland as a local. 1 he ShanlKo '.rain was run to this city. The Spo kane train made the run between this Ity and Spokane. During last night ill the stock which had been held was sent out. "During the forenoon of today there was no service, hut No. 2 came out from Portland this morning on a local schedule to run to Pendleton and arrived In The Dalles at about 1:10 this afternoon. A train was started out of Pendleton this morning to take up the local service, but was delnyed several' hours by a work train and will arrive here about 6 o'clock this evening. "The Spokane division has not suf fered In the least from the storm an-', could have been operated on sched ule time had it not been for the slide below this city. "Last night the rain started again In the Pendleton district and changed to snow at an early hour this morn ing. This change In the weather will bnve a tendency to allow the river? to fall Into their normal courses and this will give the repairers a better chance to make time. The troublH In the Blue Mountains east of Pen dlcton has been caused by serious washouts on all streams In that sec tlon being very high. It Is hoped, however, that t lit? trouble will br remedied before tomorrow morning so that Eastern mall trains can get through on time and the Eastern schedule resumed. Trnlns N03. 4 and 6 will leave Portland this even ing on time and everything will he clear for them to run up to sched til.-." The Wells-Frgo Express Company has re fused to pay the taxes levied upon its property In this county because the tax heretofore has been about 18.50. while this year it is $500. It has 12 offices In this county, of which Rose burg Is the largest, and the authori ties believe the amount of business transacted by the company and Its assessable property amply justify the assessment Assessor Staley has seen fit to levy this year.
