Our building and street improvements will run Into hundreds of thousands of dollars, and this sum will be increas ed vastly by the extensions in pro gress hy the Portland, Eugene & Eastern electric road in the territory adjacent to the city. And in all this work preference should be given res idents, who have families here to support, and transients should only be employed after the local labor sup ply is exhausted. This policy is be- l Ing pursued by the electric road com pany and paving contractors, and they are worj.hy of' commendation for the course they are taking. 0. Tvntrallv ho ..-in The warm, Aipiuos rains of the past few days, while they may retard to some extent the progress of public improvements in Eugene, have been of vast benefit to the country at large. The fine weather of the past six weeks gave the farmers an opportu nity to sow a large amount of grain, and it will not require many rains like that of yesterday during the spring to guarantee an abundant yield. The outlook for fruit and ce real crops at the present time could not be improved upon. FULTON RESOLUTION WILL CLOSE MILLS Every sawmill in the Willamette valley would close down within 30 days if congress should pass without amendment the Fulton resolution au thorizing the attorney-general to sue for the recovery of the Oregon and California land grant, according to Louis Gerlluger, of Portland. Mr. Gerllnger is largely interested In the lumber Industry and fears that it will be ruined temporarily If the Fulton measure goes through In the form that gives no protection to "innocen: purchasers." Mr. Gerllnger has no doubt that those who bought rnilroal land in good faith would ultimately have their titles completely cotil'lrni ed, but he does fear that the proposal legislation would place a cloud on tho title of all land bought from the rail road and cause industrial paralysis In the state. It might take ten or fifteen years, he believes, before the title to this land would become defi nitely settled nnd in the meantime he fears that owners who have bought in good faith would suffer greatly. It will cost $20,000, and five men -have subscribed $9000 of the amount. Local option will be an issuo ln the June election In Umatilla county. Del egates of local option workers from every precinct In the county met yes-1 terday and formulated a plan of campaign. The county local option! was defeated four wears ago by son votes, but temperance people believe i that there has been a great change in sentiment and that the movement will ,iow carry. ft' And Senator Taylor ("Fiddling Bob") isn't the only man willing to acknowledge that the talk on finance in the senate has taught hi in noth ing, except that It Is a subject on which few men agree. Even his most ardent supporters ar not claiming that the Hughes boom is developing any extraordinary amount of enthusiasm. The Dalles and Medford are both building fine city halls. Eugene ought to make a move in the same di rection. Governor Chamberlain has sprung a surprise on the people by announc ing his candidacy for the senate. FOIt Itil'NTV JCDGE.
