This is good news for the boosters of Kit gene, who feel that they set the ball rolling and that for additional townF to take up the work is aiding their efforts toward making a Greater Ore gon. A bigger and better state means larger and finer cltie, and Eugenr will put forth every effort to get het share of the new people and Increas ing business. Toward Roseburg and other enterprising towns we have thf kindliest feelings, because the creed of the true booster Is to always push but never knock. A correspondent of an Eastern pa per makes the proposition that the stars on the flag of the Union be ar ranged In the form of a swastika on the field of blue. He says the swas tika ornament has from ancient times been considered the emblem of good luck and great success, first used Ir. this country by the Indians, being significant of long life. Four times during the year the sign may be Heen in the heavens at midnight, which means, freely translated, "continue with ourage." At least, the corre sponnent contends, the design would be purely American. SAMUEL W. You can always Judge a city by Its newspapers and big eight and twelve page dail ies like The Guard are never printed In half-dead towns. 1 Rhode Island is taking a census of the unemployed of the state. It Is asserted by some of the jealous ones of Little Rhody's successful career that one of her tallest citizens mounts on a high stool and just looks around over the state and counts 'em. The mayor of Georgia City has re signed because he was expected to Rlss the brides he married. He also left A tack on his seat for his suc cessor by saying his reason for not wishing to kiss brides was his fear of contracting some disease. Notwithstanding constant asser tions that peace sentiment is growing all over the world, It will be noticed that war scares are still printed on the first page, with scare heads, and news editors come pretty near to knowing their biz. The kaiser's "buttlng-in" habit has brought him another "cussing out" from Englishmen, which is quite as strenuous as the one they gave him for patting Oom Paul Krueger on the back at the opening of the Boer war. "Don't hit a man when he's down" with one word eliminated "don't" Is a mighty popular maxim with those who think they are on top for keeps. The line between stock exchange gambling and bucket shop gambling Is so thin that Is no wonder many cannot see It at all. Payment of one bill Is more con vincing argument that the financial stringency Is over than miles of op timistic hrft air. STATE UXIVKHS1TT (Albany Democrat.) Eugene, March 10, 190S. To the Editor: What Is the mat ter with some of the people of our beloved state of Oregon? Why do they fight against their own inter ests? Is It a fact that our citizens do not believe in education. Aiaher "duration? And can a statSriiistl tution exist without reasonable sup port from the state? I am not opposed to denomination al schools. I believe in them. I am not opposed to the State Agricultural College. We need that, too. in fact, we need all our schools. But we can not do without a university, a place where girls and boys with limited means can get an education that will prepare them for good positions. Ex amine If you will the papers that con tain the positions that are filled by the class of 1907. Now there are boys, bright, intelligent boys, who are working their way through college, doing any kind of legitimate work they can get. Some writer said through the Ore goninn that the professors of the Uni versity were a set of ungodly men. That is not true. The teachers are, from the president down to the as sistants, members of our leading churches, with a few. exceptions, and not only members but better and more efricient men and women I never knew anywhere. The school does not claim to be a rellrlo.tv ln--i-tutioo, and yet they are laying the foundation for a betterment of men and women. A prominent business mail told me a few davs ago that the saloon element were going to vote against the appropriation be cause the professors worked so hard In Eugene for closing the saloons. And now why are some taxpayers making so much noise about the ap propriation? Just go to work and figure out how much more 'our taxes will be on account of raising this money for the University and you will wonder why any reasonable man objects to it. Lest you do not under stand the advantages of the State University, I will give my personal experience In the matter. Almost eight years ago I was left with a lit tle money and one child to educate. I lived In Albany. 1 love the place, for better people can be found no place on earth, and It wns in that place I spent the happiest days of my life and yet-after I lost everything but my little girl and a few hundred dollars I knew that, although God spared my health I could make a liv ing, yet it would be Impossible to ed ucate my child. So I decided to come to Eugene, and here, with the oppor tunities that a state Institution af fords. I have given my daughter an education that has enabled her to secure a lucrative position, and has prepared her as a University gradu ate to get a situation in almost any business. KATE CUNDIFF. LII'E (JUAltDS. The Life Guards are two regiments of cavalry forming part of the Brit ish household troops. They are gal lant soldiers, and every loyal British heart Is proud of them. Not only the King's household, but your's, ours. everybody's should havp Its life guards. The need or them Is espec ially great when the greatest roes of lire, diseases, find allies In the Very elements, as colds. Influenza, catarrh, the grip, and pneumonia due In the stormy month of March. The best way we know of guard against these diseases Is to strengthen the system with Hood's Sarsaparllla the great est of all lire guards. It removes the conditions In which these diseases make their most successful attacks, give vigor and tone to all the vital organs and functions, and Imparts a genial warmth to the lilixxl. lie member the weaker the system the greater the exposure to disease.
