The trial has been long, beginning last Thursday morning. A greater part of the first day was o""unt.i in securing a jury and the testimony was long n-1 some If It tedious. A number of Greeks who were workleg under Doyle at the time of the acci dent testified and their testimony had to be repeated by an interpreter, therein' taking un morp time thnn the testimony given by others. Both ldes were represented by some of the ablest attorneys in the state. The railroad company had W. D. Fenton, R. A. Lelter, well-known corpora-, i"n attorneys of Portland, and J. M. I PIpeB, the company's local counsel, ', wh'le Doyle was represented by j Judge A.' S. Bennett and Attorney Slnnott, of Th Dalles, and A. C. Woodcock, of Eugene. Judge Ben-1 nett Is said to he one of the best at-' torneya in a case of this kind on ' the coast and it is probably due to his snlendld argument before the ' iury that the plaintiff was awarded as much as he was. The case will ; irobably bp appealed tb the supreme, court by the railroad comnany. The defondnnt was given 20 days to file a motion for a new trial. The .iury In the case wss as fol lows: P. D. There have been many ans wers to this question, but not satis factory to the historians. The Hud son Bay Company, then a political power, was fighting to retain Its pet on th Columbia and Willamette Riv er, and urged the British government not to give up a foot of land. The Aberdeen treaty gave up all the coun try south of the forty-ninth parallel, with the exception of the southern portion of Vancouver Island, where a certain company had an Important post and large landed interests. Why Abi-rdivn Gave In. Professor Shafer is inclined to be lieve that the letters of Lord Aber deen will disclose that private ad vices from the country pointing out tne dltticulty of governing the coun try and the Influx of Americans, who outnumbered the English, influenced t.Se Foreign Minister In conceding the American claim in opposition to the company.
