I. itnnn, president of the De elopnicnl League, that aubscriptlons be takeg for membership in the league, which was vigorously turn- a down, and upon motion of Mayor Houston to elect a temporary chair man Fred Pell was nominated and unanimously elected. S. L. Moor head was elected temporary secre tary. On motion of Mr. Houston a committee of three, consisting of C. P. Houston, 8. L. Moorhead and W C. Washbnrne' was appointed by the ahnlr on permanent organization, to allclt membership, and report at next meeting, when they will make permanent organization. On motion f W. C. Washbnrne the fee was imt at $5.00. On motion of C. F. Hurl hurt a committee of three was ap pointed on bylaws, consisting of 11. M. Mllllorn. C. Johnson and E. M. lackson. The Napo leon I'nlon school, the largest bulld- I Ing of Its kind in tho slate, was de stroyed by fire this morning. A repetition of the Colllnwood hor ror was possibly averted by only a quarter of an hour, as It was but fif teen minutes to nine when the fire was discovered, and at nine, when all the children should have been in their seats, the building was a mass of flames. The fire broke out in the attic, It Is believed from a defec tive flue. PROSPECTS FOR COAL ARE MUCH BETTER C. W. Shoat, foreman at the Spen cer Butte coal mines, was In from the mines yesterday and reports pros pects for coal looking better than at any time yet. He also Informs us that while here he bought $1000 worth of stock. This makes the, third time Mr. Shoat has bought stock in this company, having boug.it 1000 shares for his wife two weeks ago. He said : "From Eugene will go the first report, very soon now, proving false the saying 'there Is uo good coal in Oregon.' " He says It Is here, plenty of It, and holies it will not be long before we have a good supply from the Spencer Butte mines.' CITY NEWS H. At. Rfiyner & Hunt, who moved the passenger depot, will soon begin the work of moving the freight depot, which will be located just west of the passenger depot for the present. J. F. McDnoald has bought W-. E. i Boddy's Interest In the Underwood roller skating rink, and will hereaf ter be associated with E. M. Cooper. They will conduct the rink all this spring and summer and will give reg ular band concerts and an occasional dance, making a popular amusement resort out of the place. They will also probably lease the rink for next winter. Mr. McDonald has resided here for the past year, having been nurse for George Berger up to the time of the latter's death. He has many friends who wish him success in his new venture.
