The Ice season was on, and a party of young men and women were taking advantage of It for skimming the Icy surface of one of those little bays ly ing along til coast of Long Island. There were Harry .Morro. Jlarjorie Kent aud Guthrie Prigniore. There were a lot more, but these three c the only ones who figure lu this story. Prig mure was rich, domineering aud one of those reckless men whose reckless ness Is usually folly. With women he counted for far more than be was lu trlnslcully worth. Morro was modest and. though cool, had a very keen ap preciation of danger, especially of that attending Ice boating. Nevertheless he was fond of sports, and of no sport was be more fund thau this same glid ing over Ice on steel runners. Prlgmore bad Joined the party at the Bayslde hotel, a stranger to most of them. He had not been there six hours lwfore every girl set her cap for him. This didn't matter much for any of the men except Morro. who had beeu attentive to Miss Kent, and they were supposed to be on the eve of an engagement. When the party left the hotel und went down to the Ice boats It was expected that each of the men would take out a girl und that Harry Morro would take Murjorle Kent. What dlil Prlgmore do without consult ing preferences but hand .Murjorle on to a boat I nd get on himself. This as surance was Just what captured the girls, aud Marjorle couldn't help cast ing a coquettish glance at her lover, as much as to say, "Isn't It nice to be preferred by this splendid fellow to all the otheraV" Hurry looked anxious. "Have you ever run an Ice boat. llr. Prlgmore?" he asked. "1 was born on one." Prlgmore re plied gayly. and. letting out the Mil. he started, as be was bound to do In everything, to lead the party. He hadn't gone a hundred yards, however, before his sail. Jibed, the boom Just grazing Murjorle' s head. "There'll be trouble there." mutter ed one of the men. "He doesn't know bow to suU an ice bout." Most of the couples stopped to watch the favorite. A strong wind was blow ing from across the bay. Prlgmore and Miss Keut were well out on the Ice when they were observed trying very hurd to do something, but what was not apparent. "Great lieuvens." exclaimed Morro. paling, "the sheet's fouled the tiller! He can't bring her up Into the wind." On the opposite shore the breakers had broken up the lee and were rolling in on the smiil. If the occupants of the Ice boat failed to release the sheet, they could not bring the boat up luto the wind aud they would go over the edge of the hurd Ice and bo pounded with the broken pieces on the bench. Rut with the wind pulling on the sail they were not likely to ja't It back to disengage the sheet. .Morro jumped into mi Ice boat and started after them. Now U'lruii a race letween life and death. Morro was an expert Ice boat man antl knew how to get the best sced out of his boat. He was watch ed anxiously by the party on the shore, who kept the chased boat In view as well. From the start he gained, hut could he catch tin couple beforo they shot over the edue of hard Ice? The only advantage he had was that their efforts somewhat retarded the speed of their boat. lu time Morro got within a hundred feet of them, they liolng within some (kit) feet of the breakers, both boats gulng at a terrltic speed. The sight lelore them was awful. The breakers rolled In. throwing up the anchor Ice. dashing It down, then sucking It un der the tloe for another break. The party on the opposite shore stood looking on In ghastly silence. Nearer and nearer Morro approached the yacht he chased, anil at last they could see him. as they supposed, fouled with It. Then the two beats liegan to spread apart, the sheet of Morro's being cased off and inn king a sharp turn In w hich only a considerable weight over the raised skate kept the boat from going over. Morro had steered his yacht along side of the other. Prlgmore. without waiting for Marjorle to save herself, made a Jump and caught a projection en Morro's bout. Morro reached for Marjorle aud drew her safely over the gap. Then. dim-Hug her and Prlgmore to get on the windward side, he spun his luuit around sharply and put her tH-forv the wind. A crack In the lee llko n plst.il shut lieneath the runners made every heart stand stIH. hut the headway saved theiu. and in ten sec onds mere they were out of danger. The sight of the abandoned yacht shooting over Into the broken l,e and pounded with It gave them a shudder. ; "ley drew a deep sic), of relief, , '""'"J 1-erore a freh wind, it was not '""s '"'fore saver and saved up.
