We are aske'd that question every dy, and we can t answer. , juignieeu Booths agj te compilers of R. L. Polk Company's directory estimat ed It 7500, and there has been a very npid Increase since that time. v Eugene's public school census showed this year 2174 pupils of school age, indicating a population far above the 7500 mark. Speaking of the population of Med ford the Tribune of that city says:' '' "In December, 1907, the school canvass showed 1065 school children. Bf the usual multiple of five this quld give a population or 5415. That Is the basis' upon which most cities estimate their population' and applying It to Eugene It would mean a population of 10,870. That may be a little high, but tak ing Into consideration the number of tew houses built, the school cenuus Increase and the growth of postal re rebts during the past two year3 The Guard tels sure that Eugene Is now a city In the 10.000 class. SPIRIT SIIOI 1,1) UK KXCOl'RAGKI) These fraternal visits of commer cial kdie? to neighboring towns are going to do more to assist in the up building of Western Oregon than nythlng'clse that has yet been tried. They are productive of good fellow ship and enthusiasm and these are es sentials In promoting a general, -harmonious boosting movement. Why hould Eugene and Springfield o: any other two Willamette valley towns hold grudges against each other and Site expression to feelings of strife nd rancor? Their Interests lire Identical. More people are needed In Oregon to buy small farms and LiaUe them productive, thus contributing to rd the Increase In the volume of Easiness that is so csaentlol to clty 'illllng in the Willamette villey. Bur nett, of Salem, has virtually declined to allow his name to be considered as a candidate for the office of United States district attorney, the name of John H. McXary, district attorney for -Marion county, will be sent to Wash ington for approval. It has been known for some time that Judge Bur nett's friends were urging him to try for the office, but Judge Burnett has held that the oath which he took when he became judge bars him from being a candidate. It has also been known that he has urged Mr. McNary to try for the berth that W. C. Bris tol Is holding against the protest of the Oregon delegation. The Springfield News received In formation from a thoroughly reliable source yesterday that a large force of men would commence work at the Springfield Booth-Kelly mill making repairs, installing new niachlnerv and otherwise Improving the mill and in. creasing its capacity. Machinery will be added that will lessen the cost of cutting lumber and put the plant on a much more profitable busls. The plant will be enlarged, thus increas ing the capacity of the output of lum ber to a great extent. The mill when completed will be one of the best on the Pacific eons. ' The above lnfonnaion was given a News reporer unsolicited. This means that there are great things in store for Springfield, and the starting of the mill crew will be the cause of a great revival in all lines of business. V ' SIXGER SKWIXG M.UH1XK CO. That is the only title thnt he wishes, for he makes no pretense of practic ing medicine, the word medicine be ing generally accepted as meaning drugs. The abbreviation of the title of Doctor of Osteopathy is D. O., and the province of the D. O. is to help nature, in the human body, to right herself. He believes thnt drugs are not only unnecessary, but distinctly damaging, and that the body is a very perfect machine that will run along smoothly If supplied with the proper fuel (food), and If none of its parts get out of position. - Repairing tlio Structure. But, while the most perfect of ma chines, it is also the most delicate, and derangement bf its parts can be brought about In scores of ways. Falls, jars strains, undue exertions, and local contractions or relaxations due to changes In temperature, are only a few of the things that may cause trouble in this delicate mechan ism. Sometimes the effects are Im mediately nppnrent, ' sometimes long delayed. It is for the especial work of find ing the derangement and rectifying It that the osteopathic physician is trained. Ho is a mnster mechanician, and when anything Is wrong with the machine it Is the master mechanician whose services should be called In. If some little part has slipped out of place, the resulting trouble may be nt a distant part of the mechanism, and and but the trained expert would be likely to attempt.repalrs In the wrong place and work further damage. But the skilled workman does nothing un til he has made thorough examination and found that little part that has slipped out of place: Then his train ing enables him to replace it. That is the work of the osteopathic physician. If you want an opinion as to the value of osteopathic treatment do not make the mistake of consulting any one whose whole training has been along other lines. AsK some one who has had experience with the system and knows: or, better yet, go to a good osteopath nnd give him the op portunity to demonstrate the thing to you. Dr. H. L.
