After the reading of the minutes of the pre vious meeting and the allowing of the usual arge number of current bills, the finance committee reported favorably on the Increaso of the sal ary of the city treasurer from $25 to 130 per month, and It was carried. The matter of providing a room for the treasurer, was referred to the fl- i nance committee and the mayor, the general understanding being tnat me room occupied by the fire department In the city hall will be used. Calkins moved that there be no Jump- off from the sidewalks to the cross ings of the side streets if It could ho done, when Eleventh street Is paved, and the motion carried. The street committee was instruct ed to take up the matter with the street railway on crossing the rail road track. The committee on lire and water reported as follows: The lights of Eugene were tesiea by Professor Dearborn, but the com mittee was not yet ready to report on the same. The bill for the test, t, was paid. As to certain resolutions presented by the fire department, this action was taken. The fire team was reported to be under the super vision of the chief, as to their ser vices for fire purposes, but for all purposes such as sweeping streets, etc., it shall remain subject to the council and the street committee. The part of the resolution from the fire department asking for a small salary for the assistant chief was re ported on unfavorably. The increase of the salary for the chief was favora bly commented upon, and was asked to be fixed by the council. The report wan adopted. Upon motion of Councilman Hen derson the fire chief's pay was rais ed to $75 per year. An advance in the salaries of the chief of police and night watchmen was proposed and Councilman Har baugh moved to increase the salaries to $-S5 per month. The vote stood: Calkins, no; Garrett, no; Hender son, no; Kisher, aye; McCrady, aye; llarbaugh, aye; Berger, aye. The mo tion carried. A petition for a crosswalk over Lincoln street on the south side of West Twelfth street, was referred to the street committee. The city attorney was Instructed to publish in the papers what Is to bo required 'of candidates in the mu nicipal election. The proposition of an appropria tion for $500 for the city park for the coming year was referred to the fi nance committee. The council unanimously agreed thnt the curfew ordinance should he rigidly enforced. The $4X00 received from the coun ty was ordered applied to paying the Indebtedness of the city for paving the street Intersections of Willamette street.
