Altogeth s It has been very successful, and m of all has been characterized tr good feeling on the part of the xnral contestants and their friends. Snnuous as has been the rivalry, pud nature has prevailed tlirough- nt, and the result will be accepted jill in the same spirit. It the present time the result is Mutely unknown to anyone, the Hue of votes having been so heavy a this, the last day, that even a close ties as to the result In several in ainces could not now be made, and It will be necessary for all Interested to malt the official count. The grand total paid out during the year was $141,404,522. but this included the cost of maintaining ihu department as well as the payment of pensions. It is not believed that tho total will soon bo decreased. As the veterans of the civil war and their de pendents drop out the veterans of the war with Spaiu will come In. Even If we could be assured thut the Unit ed States will not become Involved In another war during this century It Is more than probable that the year 2001 would see pensioners on account of the Spanish war still on the rolls. The last surviving pensioner of the Revolutionary war, as a widow, did not die until 1907.' Three daugh ters of the Revolution are 'still on the rolls. And there are several pen sioners of the war of 1S12, as well as a number from the war with Mexico. And now comes the wireless tele phone. A Dane has been able to ac complish the wonderful feat of talk ing through space with the aid of etheral waves as the only transmit ters. Thus far he has been unable to perfect his mechanism for long dis tances, the receiving end burning out in spite of all that he has been able to do. The inventor is persistent In his claims, however, that he will be able to talk across the Atlantic when his mechanism Is complete. An Eastern newspaper writer has discovered from prison statistics that the world is growing better. But he should consider that all the bad men are not in prison. It Is said there are more bad men outside of the pen itentiaries than there are within. We have never figured the thing out, but from the number of lawless charac ters running at large there is not much doubt of the truth of the statement. Charlie Schwab and a group of American capitalists have just Invest ed $6,000,000 in Mexican mines. It is understood that "high finance" still goes In Mexico, so long as Diaz gets his rake-off, and there is no meddling press over there to show up things. Empress Om, of Korea, is said to have been American born and to have answered to the name of Emily Brown before she took up the em press business. Story looks a little yellow. However, that may be ow ing to the shade of brown. Perhaps the Hebrew recently ar rested In Scotland for bigamy, who Is said to have nrore than 100 wives, was merely trying to be like Solo mon, who had 300, if our memory serves us. Always dangerous to fol low the gre'at. According to a cabled article, bur glary Is the latest sport of the Brit ish nobility. Whether this is true or not, burglary would be respecta ble by comparison with some of the so-called "sports" of that bunch. Senator Tillman must either keep a card Index In his desk or have an extraordinary memory, to keep track of all the resolutions of enquiry he offers in the senate. .::lin Sharp Williams proved that he, too, could make pungent eui grams on occasion, when be said. A large New York health publica tion tells Its readers of a number of simple and safe prescriptions that can be made at home. The following, however, for the cure of rheumatism and kidney and bladder troubles re ceives the greatest praise, viz: Flu Id extract dandelion, ane-half ounce; Compound Kargon, one ounce; com pound syrup sarsnparilla, three ounces. These simple, harmless In gredients can be obtained at any good prescription pharmacy at little cost, and are mixed by shaking well in a bottle. The dose for adults Is a teaspoon ful after each meal and at bedtime, drinking a full tumblerful of water after each dose. It is further stated that this prescription is a positive remedy for kidney trouble and lame back, weak bladder and urinary dif ficulties, especially of the elderly peo ple, and one of the best things to be used In rheumatic afflictions, reliev ing the aches and pains and reducing swellings. A well-known local druggist states that this mixture acts directly upon the ellmlnatlve tissues of the kid neys; cleanses these sponge like or gans and gives them power to sift and strain the poisonous waste mat ter and uric acid from the blood, which is the cause of rheumatism. Cut this out and hand to some suf ferer, which would certainly be an act of humanity. BIDS FOR W(K)I) The board of education of School District No. 4, Eugene, will receive bids up to the 20th day of February, 190S, at the office of the clerk, Mr. Frank Relsner, for the delivery nt the various school buildings in Eu gene of 100 cords of oak wood and 100 cords of fir wood,, said delivery to be completed on or before Sep tember 1, 1908. The board reserves the right to re ject uny and all bids and a bond for the faithful performance of tho con tract will be required of the success ful bidder, if any there be. Utaer February Sth, 190S. FRANK REISNER, f20 Clerk. NelghlNirbootl Favorite. Mrs. K. D. Charles, of Harbor, Mp., speaking of Electric Bitters, says: "It Is a neighborhood favorite here with us." It deserves to be a favorite ev erywhere. It gives quick relief In dyspepsia, liver complaint, kidney derangement, malnutrition, nervous ness, weakness and general debility. Its action on the byod. as a thorough purifier makes It especially useful as u spring medicine. This grand nlior ativp tonic Is sold under guarantee at W. A. Kuykeiulall's drug store.
