The Catholics held a watch meet ing last night In the old cburt-n bulla liig. The city Jail was full of drunks last night, but all were turned loose this morning. i James Hayes shipped a carload of hops from fcugene to ionuou, uu ada, yesterday. Among the carload lots of freight received at the rjugene depot ye- teruay was a cunoau ui nno for .Moon & Tlngley. In mentioning the ministers who performed marriage ceremonies In Isiiiih county during Hie year 190" Itev. J. S. llcCalluni should have been credited with 23 Instead of 22. For the first tmo In many years the Southern Pacific freight office and depot In this city remained open today. Heretofore the force has al ways enjoyed a holiday the first of January. The new $20 gold pieces have be gun to arrive in Eugene. While we have not been able to get our fingers on any of them we understand they are better looking than the new buz zard $10 pieces. The young son of Mr. and Mrs W. H. Mummey, while playing with a loaded shotgun shell yesterday, ex ploded It by hammering It with tho result that the ends of two fingers on his left hand were blown off and the hand and arm were pretty badly Injured. Dr. Drown attended the In jury. The Gardner residence on West First street, between Madison and Jeff'Tson. came near being destroyed by fir tills morning. Sparks from a defective flue started a blaze, which was discovered in tune to prevent the destruction of the house. A neighbor put the blazo out with n few buckets of water and the fire department wua not called upon. II All.ltOAD COMMISSION I'll.KS AN XI' AD ItKPOHT Fifty-flvo and one-half miles of new railroad was built In Oregon during tho year closing last night. Tho longest .piece of new track laid was 14.24 miles, built by the Malheur Valley Hallway Company, from Mai hear to Vale. The remainder of the new construction consists of small pieces of track, part of which was built by logging roads. The total railway mileage of the state Is now 2122.31 miles. These figures are given In tho first nnnuul report of tho railroad com mission of Oregon to the governor. The report recounts the work of the organization during the last year. telling of the complaints filed against the railroads of the state and the work accomplished In bettering con ditions on the railroads of Oregon during tho year. No recommendations nro made In the report, the commission deeming It best to withhold recommenda tions until tho next legislative year. The report says In this connection: in view of the fact Hint there will bo no regular session of the legisla tive assembly for more than a year, and also that the railroad commis sion act has been in effect is compar atively short time, wo think it advis able not to mako any recommenda tions ns to the amendment of tho railroad laws of the state until our next annual report." We were nt the Big Tree grove, little eastern bred Muriel, with pelargoni ums at ber slender waist, and I, a , western w riter. We had wandered 1 through the Inner grove, where the most mighty monarens are the uiani, General Bherman, Jumbo, the Sisters and others. We had reveled at the contrasts between trees 300 feet high and the cream cups and other sweet spring flowers nestling at their feet Thon wo had arnne throuch the gates Into the outer forest and were sitting t the river's edge at the end of the "TBS tllRlCLB OF THE PELARGONIUM.'" swinging bridge. The rest of the par ty stnyed away. We wore to have this Utte goodby hour apart. "The Oluut Is 05 feet in circum ference, BOO feet high and Is esti mated to be 3.000 years old," chanted Muriel In tho words of the guide. "Or w as It 6.000? Three thousand or 5.000? Oh, dear! Must I always refer to my notebook? Can I tell nothing with out always referring to my notebook?" she demanded wildly. I took the notebook from her. "Your Hps were not made for facts, dry as dust. They were made for" I hud intended to say for poetry and romance. 1 truly bad; but chancing to look at those ilps, so red, so daintily curved, so wondrously alluring, I said "kisses," aud I proved my assertion. No man could have helped It Of course she was very angry, 1 suppose I would not have had her oth erwise, but she did not spring to ber feet and run from me. "I will not apologize, for you know I want you so. Muriel," I pleaded. She regarded me scornfully. "As I have told you before, I will not mate with a dreamer. Why do you not go Into the world aud do some mighty work? Everybody" " 'Everybody works but father? N I Interrupted politely. Even with my heart sore I could nev er help laughing at Muriel and her fine talk of workerslittle dainty wisp of a creature, born to be worshiped and cared for, but taking so serious a view of life! So Muriel went back to the east vltb her schemes of philanthropy, and I stayed In my west to dream and den to write, but I found that dreaulng had grown to be a weary task vhen the most beauteous one of them all was a forbidden one, for I bad lost faith In my own brave avowal of lve's omnipotence. , I Nearly- a year had gone before -1 visited the Big Tree grove again. I went alone and took- my solitary way to the river where I had said gwlby to my dream of dreams! A furious storm had wrought some havoc tiere. Two or three of the lesser trees had fallen, nnd the swinging bridge had been twisted and broken and thrown upon the bank, while the swollen tlvor raged nugrily by it. .' At last I turned away from raj sad retrospection. My eyes cuugH a glimpse of blue In the distance, nnd somehow I thought of Muriel's, dress ns It looked on that other day when she bad not been kind. But just taeu I was joined by the guide, who waB quite a friend of mine. He had dtecov ered a new plant nnd wus natirally quite enthusiastic over It, so I went Into the Inner grove to view the dis covery. After I had left him, I still had a half hour before train tine, so I went back to the broken bridge. Again wero my eyes caught by the glimpse of blue, and I saw that a wo man was kneeling before one of the little big trees. " 'Each to her oak the bashful dryads shrink,' " I murmured. "If oaks could have dryads, why not redwoods?" 1 asked myself, lint when she turned her head and looked at me I started to ward her. "Muriel!" I cried, yet still half be lieving that It was a beautiful vision. But she sprung to ber feet, her white face going pink nnd ber tear wet eyes holding a sweetness I had never seen there before. She pointed toward the hollow of the tree. "Look. Ariuund, the mlrncls of the pelargonium!" There, in the little sifting of dirt grew the Lady Washington, not very sturdily, but still It had rooted and was alive. Her words came, back to me: " '1 might leave this flower bere and, coming again, find that It bid taken root. So might I become your wife. The one Is ns possible as the other!' " I held out my arms. She lesltnted, and her color deepened. ! "Don't think me bold, Armand. I didn't Come seeking you. Mr mother Is not well, and I camo wltl her. I came ; You came because the love god sent you, sweetheart" I finished for her. "Now, come the rest of the wy to the arms which may never let you go again." ' ; Shy In her love, pulsing with life, glowing with happiness, she came to me. My dream came truo. j "The east and the west nre met to gether." I said. '"Now I think I can write the book which will tiake the world better." ( "Don't begin It Just yet." ihe whis pered, with her soft cheek against mine.
