The assessed valuation of property
In Eugene for 1907 Bhows a consid
erable Increase over that of the pre
vious year, County Clerk ' Lee and
assistants having Just completed the
footings for Eugene city and Eugenei
school district, as well as Springfield
city and Springfield school district.
The total assessed valuation of prop
erty 'In the city of Eugene, as fixed
by Assessor Keeney this year. Is $3,
513,487, which Is an increase of
$12fi,377 over 1S0G and an Increase j
of St,K.r,9,7!l2 over liMir.. The val
uation in the school district, which
Is No. 4, this year Is $3,72S.nx. en
increase over UKiS of $123,795,!
nnd over 1!M5 of St. 704. 340. !
"The 1907 assessed valuation in!
Springfield lty Is 24ti,4.",0, and of.
the school district, which is No. 19,'
95:13.271). In 1 HOC, it was as fol-1
lows: City, $231,4311; school dis
trict. $14 7,055. !n 1905 as follows:
City, lll,210;school district, $217.
2 fi.
The reason for the big increase
made In lltnfl over the previous year
was the policy lnatigur:ited by Asses
sor Keeney to assess all property as
near Its real value as possible, in
stead of about one-half Its value,
which had been the custom before.
The Increase this year over 190fi Is
due to the extensive Improvements In
the city and the Increase In popula
tion. The totals for other municipalities
nnd school districts In the county
have not yet been footed up hut the
work will be completed soon.

Is costly to he less than at our best.
When we fall below our best self, It
