OCTOBER 21 JUXAUI"-" " 1 WILL HAVE TO Hl'KRY Manager O'Brien gave the Eugene delegation of business men absolute assurance that we should have a new depot nd' re-arranged grounds this year that would make the railroad yards "a credit to the city. Of course Mr. O'Brien Intensd to keep his word, which, he emphatically stat- t ed, he never Drone, ouce it. is given but most of us believe he will have to make t some mighty quick moves very soon in order to make good In this Instance. HOW TO IUIL1) VP Oil KILL VOIR TOWN The following from the Medford Tribune Is a good enltorlal, timely tad to the point. It deals with a condition that Is common to every growing town In Oregon, and U as applicable to Eugene as to the me tropolis of the Rogue River valley. The Tribune says: "Did you ever stop to think that when you buy merchandise or pro ducts or spend money In Medford tilt you are helping build up Med lord and that when you patronize out-of-town firms that you are indi rectly Injuring the city? "How do you expect to build up your own business If every one in loin buys what you can supply out f town? A great deal of this sort ot business Is done to the detriment ol local business interests. Outside firms pay no rent or taxes in Med lord, and have no interest of any kind In the city or Its upbuilding. Therefore, by patronizing such, you ire injuring yourself. "Yesterday the writer met a well known business man. He asked him lor an advertisement, and was told thit he had been In business so long time that advertising was super flaoua. He knew better than to ad 'ertlse. The writer then broached the subject of Job printing, and was tU that in the 14 years the mer rtsnt had been In business here he d never had a dollar's worth of fluting done In Medford, but had it all to Portland. Furthermore, he did not intend to have any of It in Medford. Yet he looks to le people ot Medford and vicinity 'f the patronage to keep h!s busl Ml alive. Where would this mor- "i"t get off If people determined to products he sells in Portland? A little Ir.ter the writer raw a mer ,,t clse a contract with a vagrant Winter for window and store signs. oe painter was an admitted wander- bo had no Interest in the com- tr. His work was second-class we are painters In Medford who wablishf d In business and do ork and spend their money lltrnnl.t.- ... Just such merchants as "o tb!s tramp. The cut of ouk, which In 1S99 was more than half the total cut of hard woods, has fallen off 3S uer cent and elm has fallc off one-half. TlO cut of soft woods Is over four times that of hard woods, t It Is frmbtful if a shortage in the former would cause dismay In so many industries. The cooperage, furni ture and vehicle Industries depend upon hardwood timber and the rail roads, telephone and telegraph com panies, agricultural Implement man ufacturers and builders use it ex tensively. This leads to the question: Where is the future supply of hard woods to be found? The cut In Ohio and In- runna, wnicn seven years ago led all other states, has fallen off one half. Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Mich igan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jer sey, Tennessee, Texas, West Virgin la and Wisconsin have also declined in hardwood production. The chief centres of production now lie In the Lake States, the lower Mississippi valley, and tho Appalachian moun tains. let in the Lake States the presence of hardwoods is an almost certain indication of rich agricultural land and when the hardwoods are cut the land Is turned permanently to agricultural use. In Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi the prodtic Hon of hard woods Is clearly In Its extreme height, and in Missouri and Texas it has already begun to de cline. The answer to the question, then, would seem to lie in the Appala chian mountains. They contain the largest body of hardwood timber left In the United States. On them grow the greatest variety of tree species anywhere to be found. Protected from fire and reckless cutting, they produce the best kind or timber, since their soil and climate combine to make heavy stands and rapid growth. Yet much of the Appalachian for est has been damaged In the past that it will bo years before it will again reach a high state of produc tiveness. Twenty billion feet of hard woods would be a conservative es timate of the annual productive ca pacity of the 75,000,000 acres of for est lands in the Appalachians if they were rightly managed. Until they are we can expect a shortage In hard wood timber. Maybe that Hearst-republican combine against Tammany is In the Interest of good government, as those responsible for It claim, but to outsiders it looks like a deal to swipe a few profitable offices for men that Hearst has been carrying on his private pay roll. No wonder tho most successful graen goods and gold brick men feel like the cheapest of pikers when t'.icy compare their operations with the sale of a paper railroad to the Metro polian Securities Company, of New York, for $965,000 by a bunch of real bunco artists. Bishop Potter has just emulated Teddy by d'nlng with a "nigger." The answer probably Is that the bish op has received less than his accus tomed newspaper attention of late and it was high time that he pulled off an extra good advertising stunt. The steel trust, the Pullman Car company anti tne naiuwm Locomo tive works' have contracts on hand and in course of negotiation with Ja pan for railroad rolling stock and rails which will make them pull hard for peace. Academic discussions of who or what is responsible for the largely Increased cost of living are not In teresting to the man who has to pay the bills of a family It's a condi tion, not a theory, that he's up against. "Helnze is coming West," accord ing to the -adllnes of a dally news paper. Looks as If he might have to take the trip on the brake beams. Probably one reason why the play, "A Fool and a Girl" was so quickly scorched by frost was that Its title was too personal to many men. If the telegraph operators had de posed President Small before they struck, things might have looked brighter for them just now. More men are Interested in how- to dodge their own taxes than in finding out whether George Wash Ingtou dodged his. Present Indications are that the time will soon come when no am bitious politician will dare take his booze In public. Sl'TlT.DAY'S FOOTBALL RESULTS Princeton, Oct. 19. Depart ment of Agriculture has recognized Knapo-Curo as an official sheep dip, and Inspectors have been notified to this effect. This action Is certainly Kratifving to the Prussian Hemedy Company, of St. Paul, Minn., who have been putting Knapo-Curo on the market for years. Inasmuch as the general government nnd many of the states reciuire that livestock shall be free from any sore of disease b. fore shipment, the shipper may feel rafe in using Knapo-Curo Prussian Sheep Dip, or f-o Prussian Hug and Cattle Dip.
