MET IN SPECIAL
SESSION LASTNIGHT
A special meeting of the city coun
cil was held last r.lght. It was held
principally for the purpose of lis
tening to the argument prepared by
the city attorney and fire and water
committee on the change proposed
In the city charter so that the city
can Ihsub waterworks bonds, the mat
ter to be voted on the second day
of September. The argument sedmed
to satisfy the members of the council
present and it will be published with
in a few days.

street, from High to Charnelton,
were presented and they were re
ferred to the street committee to in
corporate them Into one so that an
ordinance can be prepared ordering
the work done. t
A motion was made that the coun
cil Instruct the city attorney to pre
pare an ordinance requiring the
property owners on Willamette street
where no cement sidewalks now exist
to build them. The motion resulted
In a tie. It was then moved to have
the street committee Interview the
property owners In regard to the
mutter anil this was curried.
The matter of superintending the'
.drool, paving and atrt-n railway work
on the part of the city engineer was
discussed. It was Btated that Engi
neer Wagoner was not putting in the
time thought necessary, but 'no action
was taken.

a short trip Mr. and Mrs. Tlbhetts
will go to Sacramento to live. The

States senator from Oregon, is being
groomed for the senatorial race at the
April primaries. During the sum
mer he will engage In the most stren
uous training. Gallops to the far
corners of the state to become better
acquainted with the people of every
section have been arranged by his
trainers. He will single-foot It to
the nearby districts also to meet his
old friends and make new ones. By
next spring his admirers thmk he
will be in fine fettle to trot ln a

EXCURSION TO
WENOLING A
. BIG SUCCESS
Over two hundred people went on
the excursion to Wendllng und back
today, the occasion being the Inaug
uration of the passenger train service
between this city and Wendllng. The
train left here about 7:15 o'clock, it
being late on account of the rush at
the ticket wlndow.and reached Wend
llng about on schedule time. An hour
was spent by 'the excursionists look
ing through the big sawmill of the
Booth-Kelly Company and viewing
sights of the lumbering town. The
train arrived ln Eugene again about
noon, bringing most of the excur
sionists home well pleased with the
trip. Some or them remained at
Wendllng for the afternoon train,
which Is scheduled to reach Eugene
at 6:40.
The excursionists going up filled
three coaches and a "dummy" coach
and many had to stand up. More
neoole than were expected took ad
vantage of the occasion to visit the
sawmill towns.

1907, Ed Undorwood, of a complica
tion of diseases. After suffering for
number of months Mr. Underwood
wub relieved hy death. Ho had been
a resident of Cottage Grove for near
ly 40 years, and was a most popular
man. For several terms he served as
marshal, doing his work conscien
tiously and without fear or favor,
and In all his undertakings was hon
est and upright and made a largo
host of friends who sympathize with
his widow In her loss. Cottage
