In a nine-act comedy the Spring
field llliiea defeated the Coburg Gi
ants yesterday afternoon at Spring
field by the score of 15 to 1. The in
terest In the game was very great,
for a week ago Cobui'tf was ahead at
the firth inning, 3 to 0, when the
game broke up in a row, and many
fans 'were willing to hack tho Giants
yesterday, liotli tennis had strong
lineups, the Btrongest they have had
this, year, hut baseball luck inude the
game a farce.
Springfield started the hell ring
ing In the first, when Bhe punned two
runs over the plate. In the fourth
another crept In. The bombardment
began In the slxlh when Keene. Co
burit's twh'lnr, seemed to let dowi.
In that Inning two runs were netted
and in tho seventh three more.
Chick, who has practiced with the
Kugene (Jolts, then relieved Keene,
and with two or three hits off of
him and a hlg hunch of errors seven
runs crossed the rubber In the eight
and last inning for the Blues.
Coburg in the second Inning got
their lono tally by u couple of hits,
one a successful hunt, and two meii
who were hit by Tallafero.
Tallafero showod splendid form, as
did most of his team mates. Cohurg
had some changes In her lineup,
which seemed to brought over her a

The Fourth regiment of the Oregon
National Guard was formed Satur-
day evening at the itosoburg encainp -
mum, and Major Geo. O. 1 oran of

Tho appointive officers were not
chosen, hut commissions will prob
ubly soon be Issued for a lleutenunt-
colonel, two majors of the battalion,
regimental adjutant, a regimental
commissary, a regimental quarter
master and two battalion adjutants.
Captain J. M. Williams, of Company
C, Eugene, is said to be the most
likely candidate for lieutenant-colo
nel, and Captain C. C. Hammond, of I
Company A, Eugene, and Captain- F. I
I). Hamlin, or Company U-, of Hose
burg, for majors. Lieutenant F. L.
Chambers, quartermaster-commissary,
of Eugone, will also probably
have his pick of the three regimental
positions In his line. The other po
sitions will probably he promotions,
which In thru will leave openings for
a number of non-commissioned offi
cers to become commissioned.
The companies at Itoseburg were
rf, of Ashland, D, of Hoseburg, E, of
Cottage Grove, .F, of McMintiville,
and G, of Albany. Other companies
in the new companies will be A and
C of Eugene, and a now one to he
formed. ' ,.

Company K, of Portland, won the
team rifle shoot with a score of 486
out of a possible 600, and will hold'
the state trophy, which was In posses
sion of Company D, of Hoseburg. By
the conditions of the shoot, In order
to gain ownership of the cup a com
pany must win it three times In suc
cession. Ilen Shields, of Itoseburg,
won the Individual medal for the best
score In the team shoot. He also
won last year.
Saturday the individual contests
were begun. Teums are there from
every company In the state with the
exception of one or two. Shields is
reported to have made a "possible"
score of f() In GO Saturday in the
rapid fire contest. The various In
dividual matches will probably he
finished today, and In that case the
Eugene teams will return tomorrow.

number were killed just as they were

dead were found In many curious
places. Four women were found In
a closet, where" they had rushed to es
cape tha flames. The body of a wo
man was found lying over that of a
child, evidently In a futile effort to
protect her offspring. Five were

had been struck down while trying to
