THE FALLS CITY
OREGON CITY, May 20. Yester
day was the day that has long been
looked for by the members of the
SI. John's church, as well as the cit
izens of the entire vicinity for some
time past. The event was the laying
of the corner-Htone of the new Mc
LotiKhlln Institute. Although the
weather was somewhat cloudy and
threatening rain a large crowd was
present.
The services of the day began at
an early hour, the first service be
ing early mass, which a large num
ber attended. At 10 o'clock sec
ond mass was held and those who
attended had the fortune to hear
Archbishop Christie, who delivered
the sermon, and Father Sherman,
who delivered a short address. At
about 1 1 o'clock the crowd began
to gather about the platform con
structed near the place of the corner
stone laying on which the speakers
of the day wore seated.
Father Illlderbrand was the first
to address the gathering and as he
did so he spoka of the work that was
now nearly completed and of how
the thoughts of a short time ago
bad been brought to a realization.
He spoke further of the sneakers
who were to deliver the addresses
of the day and how It had given him
groat pleasure to ask these prom
inent men of Oregon to join In the
services which were about to take
place.
Tho flrHt speaker Introduced by
Fnther Illlderbrand was Mayor Can
field of this city, who, he said, was
the first person he bernnio acquaint
ed with when he came to this city
some 19 years ago.
Others speakers wore Grant Dlm
Ick, Judge Mcllrldo, Senator Gearln,
Father Sherman and Archbishop
Christie.

E. R. Pelz. the "elk tooth king,"
was in the city yesterday, making one
of his regular trips tbrougn tne staie.
He Is the nossessor of over 27,000
elk teeth, which he has gathered as a

If placed on the market they would
be worth over $125,000, as the teeth
are now getting scarce and now bring
a good price as emblemB of the Elks'

of a big cattle ranch In tne moun

Guard office yesterday and showed
tho force a number of photographs
of several bands of elk taken on the
ranch while the snow was on the
ground. In the winter they are tam

tographs at long range. A very small
part of the collection of teeth was al
so shown.
