MANAGER
REFUSES TO TREAT
WITH MEN
Chicago, April 1. The situation in
the controversy between the Western
railroads and the trainmen and con-'
ductors today Is not materially al-,
tered. A series of conferences Is be-'
Ing held to discuss various phases of
the differences. 1
Chicago, March 31. Positions
changed in the railroad situation to
day and .the managers became the
ones who refused to conciliate. Un-1
der the arguments of Commissioners
Knapp and Xelll, the labor chiefs
intimated they were willing to con
cede something In the Interest of
peace. The managers, however, de
clared that they would grant noth
ing more than they have already of- j
fered their employes, and the argil- j
meats of the government officials
failed to move them.
The labor chiefs went Into confsr-'
ence with the government officials at
10 o'clock In the morning at the Au
ditorium Annex. The session lasted
four hours, and after It adjourned
the railroad managers met Mr. Knapp
and Mr. Nelll. That session lasted
all the afternoon, when the manag-
ers again gave way to the labor com-"
mittee. It was almost a continuous
session throughout the day and even- j
Ing, for the government officials, first
with one side and then with the oth
er, and tonight Mr. Knapp said that
they were progressing, but that noth
ing definite had been accomplished
thus far.

KILLEDIN SMASH-UP
Fort Worth, April 1. Six train
men were killed in a head-on collis
ion of two freights on the Missouri,
Kansas & Texas railroad six miles
south of here today. Fire followed
the collision. Two brakemen were
cremated and three hundred head
of cattle and eight carloads of mer
chandise were burned.
The fulltire of the northbound
train to receive an order is said to
have been responsible for the wreck.
