The In crease in quantity and vnltie of these Importations has surprised our customs ofllclals. It 1b suid that but one article of Import, pig tin, shows a greater in crease during the last ten years than goat skins. In 1886, In round numbers, the Import of gont skins amounted to 40,747,029 lbs., valued at $10, 304,395, and for tho fiscal year 1900, to 1 1 1,070,31) 11Ijb., valued at $31,773,009. It will be seen that the amount In pounds has nearly trebled In tho ton years, and tho value was mure than throe times us great. In ten years, from 1890 to 1906, the total value or goat skins Imported Into the United States, omitting those Imported In the form of leather, or kid gloves,umounted to more than (240,000,000. . These figures are worthy of atten tion, especially from thoso who have farms adapted to the raising of guats. The demand fur goat sklus Increases yearly, and Is likely to con tinue to increase The Daytun, Ohio, Journal, bus been giving a practical Illustration of the paying power of proper adver tising. The Daytun Lighting Com pany conducted Its business twonty years without any newspaper adver tising, and at the ond of that timo had only 600 contracts for using 9975 10-caiidle-powor lamps. A now management took hold In August, this year, and entered upon a vigor ous campaign and in twenty-four days added more than half, or DD per cent, to the volumo of business that It had taken twonty years to build up without newspaper advertis ing. It was not a very good time of the yeur, either, for pushing tho lighting business. Think of tho loss to the company for all these years, and of tho chagrin of the old manag ers, who thought that It did not pay to advertise and that they had the field entirely covered and supplied Thero Is nothing that ran take the place of good newspaper advertising and It should bo remembered that n trade Journal Is only a nowspnper fur those In the field covered by tho publication and that nil tho sub scribers are possible buyers. The morning paper complains bo cause It tins bad to bid to BCcuro the printing of the delinquent tux list and again proclaims Its belief In the theory that politicians should pa their debts to their newspaper organ with the money of the taxpayers. Also It misrepresents when It asserts Democratic newspapers got the pat ronage at their own price until Re publicans came Into power, after which the spoils wore equally divid ed. As a hatter of fact the Register made the first demand for a divis ion of the tax list when Democrats, or fusionlsts, were in control of the county board, and Judge Klnc.ulit and Co2!!r!"-!'-!!'-r Hill acceded to their wishes and gave the Register half of the tax list. Since that tliwi, until this year, the Republican board has followed in the footsteps of Its Democratic predecessors In re spect to this portion of the county printing The Register ought to make a correct statement editorially one In awhile Just as an experiment if noth ing else. One result of tho late election is that It discloses the fact that organ ized labor is not ready to be turned Into a political machine by one man, und to give up the Individual Judg ment of the union worklugmun to that of any lender. Mr. Compers en tered the campaign with a long blacklist of members who were can didates fur re-election, and put all the machinery at his command to work to secure their defeat. Not a single success bus greeted him, while, in fact, some of those he op posed wero elected by increased ma jorities. It Is evident that working men still think fur themselves. Yesterday was a day of catastrophe and crime, half a dozen train wrecks In which over fifty people lost their lives, and a number of revolting crimes and suicides throughout tho country. CIIE terra "inebriety" describes a condition whicb calls for alco hol for its anaesthetic effect and in realitg' means a disease or DISORDER OF THE BRAIX, for which alcohol is a most grateful remedy. The use of alcohol is in most cases a symptom of some disorder and not, as supposed, the cause. The theory that the excessive use of spir its is a vico and MORAL CONDITION is not true. Great injustice and wrongs follow the efforts to correct this evil based on theso fsjat theories. A scientific study o inebriety indicates a definite disease, with distinct causes, progress and termination, - TIIE SAAIE AS OTHER DISEASES. Two marked symptoms of insanity are prominent. One is In tho periodic drinker, who drinks to excess for a short period, then abstains. This drink period is practically an acute mania or INSAJCE IM-. PULSE, which resists all efforts of. control. It is often preceded by insomnia, headaches and greut irritability. Such persons drink both secretly and openly and act like insane persons. It resembles epilepsy in its sudden convulsive onset and inability to break up or control except by the harshest measures. Cases have been noted where persons drank for two or more months, then abstained for five years, relapsing ngnin as before. An other lurge class of patients aro secret midnight drinkers WHO NEVER DRINK AT, ANY OTHER TIME. Certain atmospheric and electrical conditions seem to be active in precipitating tho drink attacks. One man only drinks at the Beashore, another on high elevations. One drinks in certain climates and seasons of the year and at no other time. Many persons drink heavily in large cities and are strict abstainers elsewhere. Another form of insanity is seen in the constant drinker who daily drinks in so called moderation, and because he is not incapacitated or peems not to be changed in feeling or degree of comfort believes that he is benefited. Measurements by instruments of precision and care ful studios of persons who drink regularly, EVEN IN SO CALLED SMALL QUANTITIES, indicate that they are the most degenerate and defective of all inebriates and the most positively insane in a GENERAL sense. ACCURATE 8TUDIES AND MEASUREMENTS SHOW THAT THE 8TEADY DRINKER HA8 ALWAY8 DELUSIONS AND HALLUCINA TIONS, WITH DEGREE8 OF DEMENTIA, WHICH HE COVER8 UP AND CAN ONLY BE SEEN BY HIS INTIMATE FRIENDS AND ASSO CIATES.
