Every member of the Brotherhood of Kail way Clerks in the Atlantic system of the Southern Pacific, fro,.-. El Paso to New Orleans, went on strike this morning. The clerks ask ten per cent increase in wages, pay for overtime and recognition of tbe order. AWFUL CRIME OF INSANE FARMER Newport, Term., Oct. 13. Chalburn Mintootb, aged fifty, one of the most prominent farmers in this neighbor hood, today murdered bis wile and four children and fatally injured two other children, then committed sni cide by cuttiug his throat. FAIRBANKS IS RECONCILED The many Eugene Investors in the stock of the llutst Automatic Switoh Co. will read the following from tbe Salt Lake City Republican of Octo ber 10 with interest: "The new automatio switch being constructed by the Hurst company was comp'eted yestoiday and several private tests were made with engine 583 of the Oregun Short Liiue, which seemed fairly well to demonstrate tbe claims made for the new device. These tests were witnessed by the yardn-aster of tbe load and several others prominent in the mechanical department. "The private tests made yesterday on the Oregon Short Line tracks be tween Second South and Third South streets, were made with the engine that has been equipped with tbe mau- ual operating device with wbicb the engineer or tiiomau, while a train is moving, in approaching tbe switch, can throw it iu either direction, One of the first features Bbown was to demonstrate that with the device in use an eugiiie or tiain could not run into an open or misplaced switch from either direction. When the on gineer applied tbe operating device aud had taken tbe siding, the switch was locked in place and held by tbe weight of the train until uftor tbe last trucks on tbe train had passed the switch. Then, the switch closed au tomatically with tbe main line cloar and locked. It was also demonstrat ed that the switch could be actuated by baud in tbo usual way. aud also that it could not b thrown by any moans while tne train was passing over it. or until the last trucks bad leared tbe main line. "Another test was made when tbe train on tho siding was pulled out upon the main line, tbe switch being operated by tbe weight of tbe cars on the rods placed along the sides of tbe rails, ' When the train had cleared the aiding and the interlocking device the Bwltcb automatically closed again for the main line."
