"Have you broken your pledge?" "I have not seen him since that night," she declnred, "but I do think he could do you so much good, father." Ellison pushed her nsldo with gentle roughness and passed on up the walk. Nettle looked nrter lilin for a moment, then, with n sigh, followed the bowed figure Into the house. When the big contract had come, there had been much Jubilation. It wns not nlone that the completion of the contract meant n large sum of money; It was the work that the suc cessful termination of this Job would bring. Then Ted Raymond, head drafts man In the pnttei.i room, had asked for Nettle's hand nnd had been re fused her father's consent. The cuglneor employed to replace the striker had disappeared after the first night's work, and it was declared that he had been thrown into the fur nace. Night after night his phantom form could be seen hovering In tho smoke nnd steam from the stack anil exhaust pipes, and no lntui dared remain, the fear of the night shift communicating Itself to the duy force. Kaymond always bad a good Influence over the men, nnd Nettie felt certain that he would be able to adjust mat ters, but she had given her pledge not even to speak to him, and she oonld not urge him to take up the wor k. It was late that night and Nettle was combing her hair when th-'ro came a gentle tnp on tho door, aud she opened it to admit her father. She wns shock ed at the change that had came over him in the few hours since dinner. His face was senmVd with furrows nnd his form stooped with care. "I have been thinking over what you said," he began without preface as she assisted him to a chair. "I do not want to break my word, but absolute ruin stares me in the face. If Kaymond can stop this fear of the supernatural In the men I will take back what I said and accept hlin ns my son-in-law. Will you send him to me in the morning?" "Are things ns bad as Unit?" she asked. Ellison nodded. "Unless I can obtain a permanent force by the end of the week." he said, "It will be impossible to complete this contract In time." I "And this Is only Tuesday," she j mused. "Ted can do it." Ellison went away comforted. Apart from what he termed his presumption, he liked the man with his clean cut in cisive manner and quick comprehen sion. Somehow he felt that herein lay his solution. The next dny there was consternation In the strikers' camp. The pickets re ported that Ted had been made super intendent of the works. They liked blm, but also they fenred him. That night gnve Ted his first view of the specter. He remained with the night shift, and shortly after midnight there wns a cry of alarm In the ynrd, nnd he rushed out to find the men all Btnrlng at the huge smokestack. There In the swirling wreaths of Fnioke floated the dead unglneer's Im age. The day shift went to work, as usual, hut It was not long Iwfore tha mm. grew uneasy. There were no appai-i-tlous In the daytime. I.ut they Mt nervous at tbe thou.-ht that the splilt of the murdered mau hovered over the works. At the uoou hour they talked it ovor and when il,e whistle blew for the te turu to work they weut to the office lu a body. They found Ted husy with some bits of glass covered with rod paint. He looked up as the spokes man entered. "Better muke It short," he said quiet ly. "I suppose you do not want to keep on working In a hauuted foun dry." "That's right," declared the lender. "We can't stand it." "Thiuk yoo cau hold out through the afternoon?" he asked. "We are going to give a little ghost party tonight Keep at it until knock-off time comes, and the two shifts will have supper together." "Won't that ghost lie around to nlgbt?" demanded the leader suspi ciously, "it may be all foolishness, but you saw It yourself last night." "I hope to again this evening," he said. "That is where the fun will come. Like to be a ghost yourself to night?" Something In Ted's manner con vinced the committee. The members went out Into the yard and advised a return to work. All the afternoon there was nil evident dislike of going into dark comers alone, nnd the engi neer shivered every time the draft made the furnace roar, but they all stuck to the work mid shared lu the party at 0 o'clock. "It will be dark enough by 0 to have the party," declared Ted. "When tbe whistle blows come Into' the yard and don't be afraid." Just before 0 Nettie and her father came whirling up. nnd n few min utes Inter the whistle blew its sum mons. The men trooped into the ynrd and gathered about In little . knots, whispering to themselves. Presently from the stack there 1 nrose a dense white smoke, and almost Immediately the ghost of the dead engineer ap fieared. With n cry the men drew to gether, nnd n moment later Madison, the spokesman of the morning, came toward Ted. The boys want to know If you are going to keep your word," he said roughly. "You said you wns going to fix that ghost." "So I am." said Ted evenly. "I said, too, that I was going to make a ghost of you. Look up." With a sliriek Madison fell to the ground, writhing In terror. There in the smoke wreaths was his own fnce. Ted's face followed and in turn a dozen of the others. Then tbe light died away and Ted mounted the steps of the oflicc. Boys," he said In n voice thnt pene trated every part of the yard, "I prom ised you that I would lay that ghost. I think I have done so. It wns n clever stage trick. The strikers are using Jones' hall across the street for their meetings. You enn see that the tower Is about level with the stack. When fresb coal was put on and tbe smoke was heavy It acted ns n screen for n magic lantern lu the tower. Thnt was all there was to It. When they went up to work the lantern tonight I had the police there to catch them, and my own man worked the lantern for this little seance. One of the men they caught was the engineer himself. He Is no more dead than I am. Are you satisfied to go back to work? We have n big contract, and I want to know thnt -yon boys will stick." You bet we will!" came the chorus, nnd Ted turned to Nettie. Let's go over to the house and have our own celelirutlon." he suggested. nroaihllTltr Vincent's Restaurant 37 W. 8th St Good, substantial meal for only J5 cents. 1 rv us and get your money's worth.
