New parties are launched with great reg ularity by the newspapers, but few of them materialize in reality. The lat est may be an excoptlou to the rule, but it sounds "fishy," to say the least, because of the men who are grouped together as the loaders of the party that la to be. As the story does, Hearst, Folk, La Follette, George Fred Williams, Hoke Smith, Governor Hanley, of Indiuua, Governor Cummins, of Iowa, and many other men more or less prom inent are In the movement, while others are considering the matter. We have two strong parties and there is no possibility that a new one can be built up that would seriously ohalleuge the older organisations. Bauer City s raising a bonus to build a railroad Into Eagle Valley. LaGrunde, Union uud other Union county towus are to be couuocted by belt road that will mako the circuit of that rich valley, and the grading la being rushed aud rails laid. Elec tric roads fr in Walla Walla are push ing southward toward Milton, Poudle tou aud other northeastern Oregon towns. In view of these facta the de velopment of the great Willamette TBlley seems slow, but we believe that the awakening is about tu come. Tho Portland Salt-in electric road is being rushed steadily up the valley, and will no doubt extend to Eugene, here it will he conuvolod with the city aud soburlwn system about to be coiittrncted by the Willamette Val ley Co. The Niitrou-Otitiiriu-Klamntb Falls road seems destined to early building by the Southern Pacific, aud the Cottage Grove-Bohemia road may ha extended dowu the valley to this cltv. When all the projects are fairly under way, we may not be so far be hiud our Eastiru Oregon brethren after all. That the country will right itself, that it will pass safely through this crisis as it has parsed through all those that have preceded it, no one familiar with its history can doubt. AT HEART the people are sound, and at heart they are just and rational. They know a dema gogue or a charlatan when they see him if not at the first sight, in variably at the second. They have never shown a disposition to burn down their houses to roast a pig, and they are not f'TRJ A their offenses. By far the larger part of the socialistic feeling that exists in this country today is due to a conviction of this kind in the minds of thousands of people. The evil consequences of this state of mind can only be avoided by a convincing demonstration that there is the SAME LAW for the rich as for the poor, the same justice for the trust magnate as for the penniless man.
