Kor e vvlille we corresponded, then finally lost track of each other. Meanwhile for nie the romance bad gone out of the detective service, and It had become the detective business, unvarnished, at which 1 struggled to keep tho v.olf from the door for my telf and family. I made very little money and tired of my duties. How ever, there was no help for me. I knew uo other calling and kept on hunting crtmlnals. One day 1 was sauntering along Washington street, Chicago, when a man passed me and whispered in my ear, "C. iSc G.'s in ten minutes." then passed on and was lost iu the crowd. Who ho was, what he meant or how he came to know me was a mys tery. My training as a detective at once assured me that 1 might be on the track of a crime. "C. & 11. 's In ten minutes." I have It! The letters were the Initials of a large restaurant and saloon near by. 1 kept right on to the place, entered it and looked about for my man. He soon entered, passed mo without a glance and went to a private dltiing room, to which 1 fol lowed him. The door was scarcely closed when he 6ald to me: "It's some time since we met The last I saw of you you were bertig led off by a cop with a pair of bracelets on jour wrists. So was I." "Memories are uot always pleasant Better come to the point at once." "Right you are. Simmons and 1 (you know Simmons; he was with us on the other job) was discharged last week. Well, we're going to crack a bank, and we are badly In need, of a man we can trust to watch. If you'll Join us, we'll share the plunder In thirds." I consented, nnd be unfolded a plan to rob the th National. How the man bad mistaken me for some one else I could not Imagine. However, 1 did not trouble myself very much about It being absorbed with the wonderful piece of luck that had be fnlleu me. 1 was too old a bird to give away my secret for nothing. I went to the president of the th Na tional and told him that I knew of a 6erlous misfortune about lo happen to him and that 1 would tell the secret for $10,000. He questioned me to get a clew without paying for It, but 1 sealed my mouth, and he dually con tracted to pay me what 1 asked. Of course on the night wc were to rob the bank I bad policemen stationed at convenient places, who nt the proper time swooped down upon us and captured us red handed und Just as the burglars were about to get awny with $75,000 In bills, besides a large utimber of government bonds. I was led away to Jail with a pnlr of handcuffs on my wrists, which were taken off ns noon as 1 was out of sight of my colaborers. Meanwhllo the man who had met me on the street was standing beside me waiting for a Black Mann. "There's uo way In the world this could- have leaked out" he muttered, "except through you. Now, 1 believe you gave us away at Buffalo. Vou'Il pay for this." The next day I received my pay ond In the evening sat by my lire smoking contentedly and planning for a new start with my capital when the fact . suddenly popped into my head that 1 had been mistaken lor my twin brother. Had Bob gone to the bad' My own brother, born at the same time, grown up with me, a burglar, a Jailbird It was sickening! As soon as I could get awny 1 start ed for Buffalo. There I visited tho chief of police, who helped me to In formation about the bank robberies that had occurred In that city, but there was no record of nny one of my name Wharton bring connected with any of them. One day a police cap tain, on seeing me, stared at me a moment, then asked: "How did you get out?" I soon learned that he mistook me for a man who had been convicted of bnnk robbery a year before and sen tenced to the penitentiary for live years. I went to the prison and there found my brother Hob. As soon as he saw rae be threw himself on my neck, exclaiming: "Oh. Tom. this comes of reading (inborlnu nnd Conan Doyle!" "Explain. Hob." "1 fell In with some men who pro posed to rob a bank and convinced them that I was one of their kind. Be fore 1 could explain how I Intended to trap them they were arrested and peached on me. Papers were found In lay room connecting me with them. I was arresied. tried and convicted. The mail who got the reward I had hoped fur was n newspap r reporter and no detective nt nil. I wish I had the necks of (inliorlaii nnd Conan Doyle In one noose. I'd bans both of them higher than Hainan." You should have taken precau tions I have Just made 10.000 for doing what has sent you to prison." 1 went to th" governor nnd stated my own and uiy brother's attempted work in sueli n way ns lo secure him n pardon.
