AttM J, M. William Portland. Or v'vw'-e-e--ei USELESS JIM" By WiiUarn J. Lampton Ooprrlght, lffis, by the o. .uciure company ' - -w-w' Jim Doty was the son of Industrious :id thrifty pareuts, but be was no ex emplar of the doctrine of heredity. As a boy he had gone to school because If he had not gone there the truant offl. cer would have made existence else-' w nere uncomfortable for him. and Jim urai.j, ,u-ea to be comfortable. At school It was easier to remain at the foot of bis class than higher up, so be philosophically chose the easy thing auu biuck 10 it. Jim was not a mis chievous boy or a bad one In any sense, because those attributes require effort to maiutam them. As somebodv had to be at the foot of the class, and there were those who were discontented lucre, tue teacher accepted Jim as a special providence and made the most of him. "It's beyond me about JImmle." h!a mother was wont to' sav. "Hin bad boy nor up to no mischief, and you'd think when he went to school he'd learn his lessons lust because ha umu t want to learn nothln' else, but ue won i learu a single thing, good or uau. tie just seems to be everlasting uu-iess settin- around and Benin' arouna anu settin' around. And I'm sure ne don't get it from the Anderuin side of the house neither." Mrs. Doty was an Anderson, and thi. rouuusiou or ners was an unsupported animadversion upon Mr. Doty because that worthy man not only made a very comfortable living, but owned a small farm and had money laid away for a rainy day. When Jim was old enoueh to en n work, his father secured a nl. him to learn the carpenter trade, which was rather a surprislne selection, na success In that depended upon a skill which did not appear to be one of the characteristics of the young apprentice. "I put him at that," Mr. Doty ex plained to an inquiring friend, "because I've seen that boy set on a soapbox in the shade and whittle for air im, hand runnln". Of course he never whit. tics nothing out of the wood he uses up, but I kind of thoueht mnvho h would learn to if I put blm at carpen terln'." Time, and not a very lone tlma ihiop proved the spaciousness of Mr. Doty's logic, and Jim was no longer seen about the shop where ho had essayed to handle the drawknlfe and the saw. After this attempt to make a Bkllled laborer of his son Mr. Dotv thought possibly there might be an undevelop ed instinct for agriculture In the youth. ana Jim was sent to a farm not far from the village. 'His usefulness in that fleld was manifested within thr days by his return to the parental roof. "What's the matter now?" inquired his father when Jim walked Into the bouse at supper time and calmly took his accustomed place at the table as If ne nau not missed a meal. "Dunno," replied Jim unconcornedlv. "Old man Sparks said he reckoned the mortgage ou the place was about all the load It could carry at present, and ue toiu me i could go." Mr. Doty smiled, lie couldn't be very harsh with bis only sou, because, while he did nothing to add to the-glory and nonor aua wealth of the name of Doty, ue uiu as little to bring shame or sor row upon It Mr. Doty recognized, in Jim a negative blessing, and many fa thers would be only too glad If they naa sucn sons. By the time Jim bad reached his twenty-fifth year be had tried his hand at every kind of work the village and vicinity bad to offer, and he had ac quired nothing except the title of "Use less Jim." But Jim did not worry. He was a philosopher, and his good nature was imperturbable. "Why the dickens don't you go to work, Jlmr said Hanks, the grocery. man, one day as Jim sat on a salt bar rel in the shade chipping away at the cmne with his knife. Got a Job you'd like to give me?" re. sponded Jim In a willing tone, and the groceryman disappeared. He might be anxious enough to see Jim hare a job. due ne uia not care to assume the rela tionship of employer. As nothing else of a permanent char acter offered Itself, Jim concluded, en tirely on his own volition, to fall In lore. They say an Idle brain is the devil's workshop, and surely be found a fine place for his business in Jim. Why Jim ever fell In love nobody could say, and he did not know himself, nor did be think It worth the effort to dis cover. It waa enough for him that he was In love, and he was serious about it, too so serious, indeed, that he wanted to marry the object of his choice forthwith, thereby displaying a wholly unsuspected energy. This object was Mary Canby, the blacksmith's daughter and also the vil lage schoolteacher. She was pretty and bright, and she lilted Jim because, although disinclined to bodily exertion, be was not slow of wit and he could talk well. "For goodness sakes, JImmle," said his mother she called him JImmle, as If be were still a boy "whatever do you want to marry for? You can't sup port yourself, much less a wife and family, and married women can't schoolteacb to support their hus bands." 1 dunno, mother," replied Jim, whit tling a stick down to a One point "Well, you ought to know," she salli. letting her temper show Itself. "Tou Just can't marry, that's all. You're the uselessest thing on earth now, and married you'd be worse." "I guess there's some use for m In Saved From Awfal Fate. "Everybody said I bad ooDaump Hon," writes Mrs A M Mhlelde, of Cbambersbara:, Ps, "I wa so low after aix moDths or severe slckneas caused by hay fever and asthma that few thought I omild get well, hut I learned of the marvelous merit of Dr Kins' New Discovery for consumption, oaed It and was onmpletey cured." She looked him over as be stood in the doorway the very picture of care less Indifference and shirtless good Da ture. "Well," she replied, "he's the only one that knows, and he ain't told yet" When Mary Canby discovered that Jim was beginning to "act foolish she promptly but kindly told him of tue utter uselessness of his suit "Why don't you iriri; uiarry me. Mary?" be asked In a i, dazed way. as u not comprehending the full pur port of her decision. "We've always been friends, and you know you like rue." "I know, Jim,' she said gently, "but like Is not love, and one cannot inarrv without love." "Do you love anybody else?" be ask ed, quickening a little. "I've heard that you thought a good deal of Jack Murflu and him of you." Mary Canby was not coquetting with Jim uoty. xes, Jim, I do," she answered frankly, "and Jack and' I are to be married as soon as school closes for the summer." Jim choked, and the tears came to his eyes. "Mother said I wasn't any use In the world, and I guess I ain't," he said bitterly, hopelessly. "Oh, yes, you are, Jim," she encour aged him. "Your chance hasn't come yet, but It will." . "I dunno," he sighed despairingly, and, turning away, be walked slowly nomeward alone. The village knew what was the mat ter with Jim for the next month or more, but it was considerate of bis suf fering, and he heard no Jeering word nor the laugh that hurts. Two weeks before the school closed Jim was down at the railroad shops whereJack Murnnwas foreman. He waa there chiefly because he did not hap pen to be elsewhere at the moment, and be was sitting In the shade whittling. Possibly be was somewhat more ac tive than usual and was thinking, for he bad Just seen Jack Murfln walking across the yards toward a gnp in the fence, and he knew the date of Jack's wedding day. They were not friends In the sense of associates, but Jack did not care how much Jim enjoyed him self about the place so long as be did not interfere with business, and Jim had never been given to Interfering with business If it did not Interfere with him. . Iutent upon his thoughts, Jim con tinued whittling until presently he was recalled to bis surroundings by a shout of alarm. It was Jack's voice, and, looking through the gap In the fence, he saw Jack lying r.cross the rails, with his leg twisted under him and bis foot fast In a frog. Ho had passed out to the main tracks, and Jim heard a train coming. Quicker than he bad ever moved before In all his stagnant lifo ne cleared the space between them and stood In the track over his rival's body. The heavy engine coming down had been reversed, but too late, and no pow er on earth could stop it But Jim nev er faltered. Lifting the prostrate man to a sitting position, he wrenched his foot from the fatal clutch, and. with giant's strength, be flung him outside tue rails. When Jim's body was picked ud few minutes later, a little life remain. ed Just n fluttering spark, but enough to give tne light that never fades. "Jim, Jim!" cried Murfln, taking him in nis arms. "It's all right now, Jack," whispered Jim, opening bis eyes and smiling. Mary Bald I was some use In the world and my chance would come some time. Tell her" His words had come painfully and In gasps, and they stopped with the sen tence unfinished. But Jack knew what to ten Mary. To Live Lobs;. must people are eager to nave a good, tried recipe for longevity. There are many such about, but few are really practicable or really reliable, as what has proved good In one case baa not done so In another, but tbe advice offered by Sir Henry Thompson to those who would like to reach old age, as be has done, and remain vigorous and hardworking as well, 1b really pos sible for all to follow. He does not pretend that longevity can be attained qulia easily. On tbe contrary, bis sys tem Involves much self denial; but, at least It is not an eccentric one. His theory, based on practical and personal experience. Is that strict temperance in food as well as drink will prolong life. In early life one may eat freely, but as middle life Is reached one must "slow down." Eat as little as possible, drink as little ss possible and always eat simply, and you will be on the safe side, be avers. One can thoroughly be lieve sucb a doctrine. Large and In discreet feeders are never as well or as long lived as their brethren who ap parently Bhow no appreciation of food. Uad Weak Lanes.
