Up rose the secoud disk, and she followed Its upward course to where it began to descend. Just then she saw two people coming along the shore Tom nnd Mabel. Hero was her chance to show them what she could do. Down came the pigeon faster and faster. She pulled tbe trigger, stepped back, her ankle turned, and down she went iu a most ungraceful heap. The report of her gun, the twinge of her ankle and her fall all seemed to come at once, and she thought, "I've shot myself," nnd then tried to laugh as she realized the gun did not shoot out of thnt end. Then everything turn ed black and she felt no more pain. 'I lie next thing she beard was Tom taming in a strange voice and in a most peculiar way. jiy uaning, ne was saying, "my own little girl." Then she felt Tom's face close to hers, and Ills voice sounded more natural. Oh, Margaret!" ho said. "Look at me. Open your eyes, sweetheart." And she opened her eyes to find that be had been talking to her all tbe time. Rastus and Margaret were the onlv cheerful ones. Rastus said. "You done hit de pigeon, Miss Marg'ret," In comforting tone. Tom was still on his knees beside Mnrgaret. The latter exclaimed. "Mv ankle pains me quite a bit, but If you win ueip me up, Tommy, I think I can hobble back to the inn." So Tom rais ed her gently, nnd she smiled sweetly at Mabel over bis nice broad shoulder. Then she gave a little moan. "Let me carry you, Margaret." Tom said. Mabel bit her lin. I'm afraid I am dreadfully henvv." Margaret murmured, "but It does hurt so." Then, as Tom lifted her in his arms, she said, "Oh, Mabel, dear, if you uou t mind I will be ever so much obliged will you carry my gun?" An Artlllolnl Pearl. A ball of beeswax introduced Into the shell of a living fresh water mussel has resulted in producing the most remark able artificial pearl in existence. It is about an inch and a half In length, oval in form and pink in color and is now the property of tho Smithsonian insti tution. The ball of wax was placed near the hinge of tho bivalve, which, being kept in a tank of fresh water, was carefully watched. The Irritation of the wax caused tbe mollusk to pro tect itself by coating tbe foreign object with a smooth coating of pearl stuff the same material as that which is used iu lining the inner surface of its shell. In the case in question the result was an enormous pearl. Owing to pressure, however, tbe wax ball lost Its spherical shape and became oval la form. At the end of two years tbe mussel was taken out of the tank and opened aud the pearl removed. The wax afterward contracted, owing to dryness, which caused tbe pearl shell to crack. This accident, while destroying the commer cial value of tbe pearl, made It possi ble to observe the thickness of the nacreous covering, which Is somewhat greater than that of an ordinary sheet of letter paper. If the pearl were not flawed, It would be worth an enormous sum of money, but even as it is it is priceless as a curiosity. Washington Star. Her 1ovelr Lettuce Dlah.
