WEDNESDAY - - JULY 23 BUSINESS FAILURES OF 1902. Bradstreet'a report of business failures for the first half year 1902 notes a total of 6262 embarrass ments, with liabilities of 56,927, 688 and asset of $27,018,802, Tnere ii here is shown a deorease of 3.7 per oent from the same period jeu ago, bnt an inorease of 7.8 per oent over 1900 and of 4 2 per oent over 1899. Baok of that year and as far away as 1888 oompari' ions favor the present year the de orease in commercial, mortality ranging lrom a fraotion of 1 per oent to aa high aa 80 per oent. Liabilities, likewise, make a good comparison, they showing . de crease from laat year of 13.6 per oent, and from 1900 of 5 per oent, though marking an Inorease over 1899 of 14 per oent. With this ingle ezoeption however, the lia bilities in 1902 were the smallest for ten years past, and were, with tbe ezoeption of 1899 and 1892, tbe smallest for 14 years past. . Tbe percentage of antels to liabilities in other words, the salvage on the loss was 47.4 per oent this year a against 49 per oent a year ago and 45.7 per oent in 1900. Of the far western group, which embraces Washington, Oregon, Ida ho, California, Nevada aud Utah, the records show a deoreaae from 379 failures for six montb ot 1901, to 837 in 1902, with liabilities $660,000 lesa at 91,485,153 and as sets 1668,493 this year, aa com pared with $1,020,963 last, Washington records 46 failures for the alx months, an inorease 01 eight in number, , but liabilities were approximately $170,000 less than last year at $408,412, with as sets $220,489, aa against $309,416 In 1901, Idaho had 12 failure in the six month of this year, with $31,600 liabilities against (even failure in 1901, with $42,000 liabilities, while Oregon reports but 84 failures this year, againat 68 In 1901, with $168,228 llabiil- tie 00 m pared with $360,794 laat year.
