Rldgeway, Eugene, This afternoon at 2:10 o'olock as the south bound passenger train was standing at the depot, flames were seen to be pourlog from box car standing on the side track in front of S H Friendly's warehouse and loaded with ex celsior from the Eugene Excelsior Works The crowd at the depot rmhed to tin scene, Someone had presence of mind enough to slide the doors of the car shut, the crowd pusbed'the car away from the waiehouse and the lire extinguishing apparatus was sent for. When the chemical engine and hosa carls arrived the doors were thrown open and the flames soon extinguished. Nearly 12 Uns of excelsior waa destroyed Tbe car holdB an even 12 tons, and it lacked only one wagon load of being full. W J Itoyce, of the excelsior factory, when seen by a reporter at the fire, stated that the loss on the excelsior would be about $250. The in terior of the car was pretty badly burned and will probably bare to be rebuilt. As to the origin of the firs, Section Foreman Strawn who was working near by, said he saw two little boys, well known about town, play ing in the car and aaw one of them strike match and set fire to the exceMor and then run rway.
