BOER-BRITISH PEACE.
Great Britain has compelled
peace in Sooth Afrion after an ex
penditure of a billion and half a dol
lars and a loss ol thirty thousand
lives. Probably Boer losses, in
cluding lives of women and chil
dren sacrificed inoident to the
straggle, equal those of the British.
A fearful loss of life and treasure
in the aggregate!
Ureat Britain shoira a high order
of statesmanship by giving the
vanquished Boers most liberal
terms. I heir enemies of tbe past
tiro years oannot but beoome then
lriends. Here is a synopsis of tne
peace argument:
The burgher foroes lay down
tbeir arms and hand over all then
rllles, guns and muaiiions of war

control. All prisoners are to bt

In Bjutb Africa, witbjut loss ol
liberty or property. No aotion to
ba taken against prisoners ezuepi
where tbey are guilty of breiouee
of the rules of war. Dutch is to
be taught in the sohouls, it desired
by the parents, and used in the
courts if necessary. Rifles are al
lowed tor protection. Military oo
oupation is to be withdrawn ae
Boon as possible, and self-government
substituted. There is to be
no tax on tbe Transvaal to pay the
coet o' the war. The sum of 8,000,-
000 pounds sterling, 115 000,000, t
' to be provided tor re.t joking the
Boer farms. Rebels are liable lot
trial, aooording to the law of the
oolony to whioh they belong. The
rank and file will be disfranchised
for life. Loans will be made on a
year's time without interest, alter

GOVERNMENT CROP REPORT.
Present Condition of Grain and
Fruit In Oregon. I
Tbe condition of grain oontioan
good, especially to tbe eastern portion
of tbe state. There baa been plenty uf
moisture for spring sown wheat and as
tbe pltnt haa bum led nicely tbe yield
promises lo be larger than usual. Fall
wbeat Is beading, but owing to the
cool weather, It is making alow ad
vancement, and steady, mild temper
ature Is now needed to mature a
plump aid bard kernel.
Some alfalfa baa beeoout In Southern
Oregon, and clover and alfalfa la gen
erally ready for harvesting, which Is
retarded by the unsettled condition of
tbe weatber. Pastures continue good
and stock is now fat and sleek. Sbeep
shearing la progressing slowly and tbe
clip will probably tie an average one,
Sugar tiaets In Union county are be
ing thinned and tba crop Is doing
nloely. Hardens, oorn, potato and
hops all need warmer weatber, but
they oonMnae tbrlfty and promising
although very backward.
Tbe warm weatber during tbe first
of t be week brought In a number of en
onu raging fruit reports to tbe effect
that tbe damage to prunes, oherriea
and pears w S uot as great as expected,
but the weather later beoame unfavor

plenty of berrieelu nil parts of tbe state.

They may not lie particularly severe at
