TUESDAY MAY 27 SHERIFF CANDIDATE'S VOTE COMPARISON. The nomination of candidates for the sherlft s offloe who have eaoh been voted for and elected twioa makes comparisons of former election return, interesting and InBirnntlirtv BOW A J JOHNSON BAN. In 1894 there were throe tloke'i in the field, with three candidates r eaoh otnoe from- me top to me Wttm n k tlnbat 1 klulnu It la impossible to make intelligent comparisons. However J II Mo- Clung reoelved 2088 votes .'or sena tor, and 0 H Baker, of Walter vllle 1976 votes for representative, while A J Johnson, the Republican Candida! J for sheriff, reoelvtd but 1957. In 1896 it was a straight raoe I -tween Mr Johnson for reeleotion, and Horace Hampton, Democratic candidate. With the advantage of having held the office two years Mr Johnson was elected by only 58 majority. And Mr Hampton praotioally made no oonteet for the place believing, aa he legretfully stated after the returns oame in showing suoh a close vote, that he had no show. At; that same election the candidates for prose outing attorney were lnth entire strangers to the ollisuus ot Lane county, even as to their reputa tions, The Republican candidate oarried the oounty by 265 votes, Bo muoh for Mr Johnson's record as a political raoer. HOW W W WITHERS RAN In 1894 it was a three-handed raoe, A J Johnson Republican, Henry J Day Democrat, and W W Withers Peoples, being the oandi data. Mr Day's popularity drew heavily from Mr Withers and he was a bad third in the raoe. In 1898 it was a straight fight between C L Sjott, Republican, and W V Withers, Democrat. Though Mr Soott had the ad vantage of having served as ohlef deputy tinder Mr Johnson, Withers was Duavil elected tbouith by the close ma In 1900 it was again a two. handed contest, Sheriff Withers be- ino riuilontul hv the nnlerjdid ma' . ..... At this same election the Republican candidate for supreme judge bad 410 majority over nis uemocrauo opponent. And both candidates were practical ly unknown in this county. COMPARATIVE POPULARITY. Running for a second term Mr Johnson .barely pulled though, with but 68 majority, through the oounty Was quite heavily Repub- lican, as shown by the vote for proseoating attorney. Running for a second term Sheriff Withers oarried the oounty by 794 majority. And that with majorities of over four hundred for the Republican candidates lor oon- gresB and supreme judgel We may often judge the future from the past. Who will say that the figures we have given do not indicate with almost absolute cer tainty who will be eleoted sheriff next Monday? DON'T LIKE WOMEN'S HAT STYLES. A Sumpter, Union oounty, edi tor, who probably wandered into a ohuroh while suffering from mental aberration, found out that women wear their hats in ohuroh. More than that he does not like present styles. Here are his obsrvations: Ladies should take off their hatB in ohuroh. Diras, chameleon skins, stufled weasels. ribbons, beads, lets, stioks, straw, paper uowers, ooin taswia uu thistledown, it makes me sinner feel lost in the wilderness.
