There are aa bright and oapable young and middle-aged educators in Oregon and on the Paoiflo Coast at the ' Batt. A new president for the University of Oregon mast Boon be seleoted. Don't go east for for the man! Take him from among the people he understands and J who will understand him. Oregon eduoatloaal Institutions have too often met disaster through etstorn importations. We should be through with them. PORTLAND UREG0NIAN AND STATE UNIVERSITY. The Oregonlan takes the op. portunlty of resignation of Dr Strong to aooept a muoh more lucrative and influential position to again show its prejudice gainst the University of Oregon. The Portland paper should not be discouraged booause the Eugene institution is not equal to those of "Ann Arbor, Madison, Lincoln and Lawrenoe." We may oall the t'.BDtion of the prejudiced oritio in the Oregonlan offloe tj the faot that Oregon Is a small state oom pared with Wisconsin, Michigan, Nebraska or Kansas; that the O re gents a Is not a great paper com pared with the Detroit Free Press, the Omaha Bee or World-Herald, or the Milwaukee Journal. Still we find no complaint that the Oregonlan falls ti fill the field in whloh it olrouiatee. The Oregonlan oould do muoh towards the upbuilding of the Ore gon State University. It finds more agreeable employment, though, in occasional criticism almost without exception of a dis paraging nature. It Is unfortunate that the leading paper of the state hould treat It date university so .unkindly and unfairly. The Uni veriily deserves better at its hands, CEORGE CHAMBERLAIN. BIS CHARACTER AND CON SCIENCE. Fortius OeiraapoaSaae. There is thii to say about Mr : i i r mi SUMMON Chamberlain, be is nut receiving fair treatment at the bands of the Oregonian. It is true tint be is "i good follow," if a proper defimtiuu ol that term be given. He is a generous, kindly man ti mee1 whom is a great plemure lie I genial and oourieoi.s, mtn lbt wins friends everywhere Iih goes. He is geoerua towards uie op ponents. But there is anotb. r eide to bis obaraoter, and that is bis conscien tious devotion to duty. He is the ideal official. He quickly says yes" to a personal requeet of a friend or one who is in trouble, if that request louohes not the duties of his offioial position, and be has a "no" that rings dear and Btrona upon every occasion when "no" u suggested by consideration of the good of the people whom be serve?. One can not come in personal cootaot with Mr Chamberlain without entertaining euoh convic tions as are here set forth. Mr Chamberlain is, let It be said, the ideal offioial, and in a oity more or lees reeking with corruption, where men in all stations of life engage in or consent to grafting, the man is not in Portland who dares to Bay that Mr Chamberlain ever received any money from any oorrupt souroe. 1 quote tbe words ot a prominent republican, Jho, by reason of bis position, is oompelled to work againtt Mr Chamberlain openly, but who will vote for him in private, and who says: "I shal' Tote for Mr Chamberlain. He is one man in public office, who does not steal. He is one man who, having immense power and abundant opportunity to graft, has never grafted. He is one man who stands like .steel against all offers or attempts to oorrupt bie boneety of purpose. His record is absolutely olean. I shall vote for George Chamberlain and he will be elected." If vou have not registered with the county clerk at the courthouse do so right away. Registration closes May 15, then if unreg istered you will be put to the trouble of hunting up six citizens to vouch for your citizenship before you will be allowed to vote on eleo tion day. It is loss trouble to register now than to sot the necessary certification on election uay. Peculiar Iowa Storm. Sioux City, Iowa, April 26. CASTOR I A for Infants and Children, tin Kind You Hare Always Boughs t . : :j ii Mm SCIENTIHC OPTICS. By Dr. C. Roberts. ThesRlenon nfnpllca and refraotlnn liaa develourd Hud roveu It a fact tba) a ix-rfect eye never falls In Its vision for dlelMir. Ktco though a person may have per act, diitaut vision, be may be oompelllng It tbrougb an lm perfeol eye. The eye, being coutrulleo by tbe bralD, means a constant brain train if the eye is In tbe iwixt Imper fect. Tbe brain in I urn oalla on tbe ner vous system lo regain tbe strength neceeearlly ueed to compel vision ; therefore, tbe brain or nerves are uu ally fleeted before tbe vision, wblon only grows bad because of loss of power to compel perfect vision through an imperfect eye. Now, as the perfect eye never falls for distant vision, It Is tbe refraollomsl's business to make tbe Imperfect eye perfect with glasses, and then It should never fall. Wbj? Be. cause It has been made perfect. If your glasses are not so ground that tbey correct every error and there may be several errors you will still bave trouble, . and be oompelled to ohange your glasses time after time, and your eyes will be a ooustant source of annoyauoe and expense to you This change and expense are abso lutely unnecessary. DrOW Koberts has fitted glasses for distant vision for the last fifteen yean with the dlstlnot understanding that If at any time In tbe future the vision oould be In tbe least Improved by blm self or any other refractionlst In tbe world, be would do It free of charge. If you bave beadaobe or sutler from nervousness, It Is almost absolute prool that your eyes.are Imperfect. Wben failure to obtain relief by tbe use ol ordinary remedies demonstrates the faot tbat the trouble does not lie lu or dinary causes, call on Dr O W Koberts at Hoflman House, Eugene, and he will make a free examination and give you suoh an explanation of your eyes and their oonneotlou with the nervous system tbat you cannot help but see why your eyes may be tbe cause of your trouble.
